Reader Pick
ELLIS ISLAND CASINO & BREWERY
4178 Koval Lane

It takes a lot of nerves to get up there and bust out "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" with sufficient emotional force — we like to end the song in tears, burning photos of our exes, while cursing the gods for devising something so cruel as love. And by nerves, we mean lots and lots of beer. Cheap beer. Good, cheap beer. That's why Ellis Island is the place readers go to get their Kenny Loggins on. In addition to one of the most vast selections of tunes to choose from, there's also $1 beers from the Ellis Island Brewery. Sure, your singing voice is normally as pleasant as the sound of a baby seal getting dunked in battery acid, but when drunk, everyone becomes Gloria Gaynor. The Gold Coast brings down the house with a roaring take on Captain & Tennille's "Love Will Keep Up Together" in second.

Staff Pick
ELVIS' RESTAURANT & LOUNGE
545 E. Sahara Ave.

Big pipes and bigger sideburns, this is what you used to get at this now-shuttered nightspot during its Thursday karaoke nights, where the amateur Elvi used to flock like well-coiffed waterfowl. Some dudes would show up in full-on jumpsuits so awesomely gaudy, it was as if the Liberace Museum sprouted legs and moon walked over to Sahara Avenue. Others just came by to pay tribute to Presley in the best way, by earnestly singing his songs to a roomful of fans. The decor looked like it was swiped from Graceland's yard sale: There were big Elvis cutouts, posters and signs, and you could even get buzzed on Elvis wine. Like The King himself, this place will be missed.

Not that that means I am rock star singer...but I do know a good D.J. when he sings versus a bad D.J. who "attempts: to sing. It is all about the fun factor...we miss the Karaoke D.J. who was there in July 2008. The one who is at Ellis Island now (last we saw March 15-19 2009) is NO GOOD! If Ellis Island wants a crowd of young and old...get the old D.J. back! The D.J. we saw in March 2009 would make even even the oldest customer fall asleep...OR LEAVE after 10 minutes!

We went there the night we got engaged...the night of our bachelor/bachelorette parties...the night before the wedding (we came from Texas) because we had so much fun with the D.J. that was there when we got engaged/bach. parties. We went back for Spring Break 2009...not same D.J. We hope our fav. D.J. was on vacation and it was a random older guy who was all kinds of NO FUN! We love Ellis Island...but bring back the GOOD D.J. for Karaoke!!! PLEASE! We do not want to hang out at Bill's for Karaoke!
