THE KILLERS
Gee, who saw this one coming? The Killers have this category in one of those headlocks that your older brother used to put you in upon discovering that you had scratched one of his favorite Blue Oyster Cult LPs. It's that serious! But these dudes have earned their acclaim, touring throughout much of 2007 in support of their sophomore LP, and releasing a swell new B-sides and rarities collection, "Sawdust," highlighted by a duet with Lou Reed. They are truly the Big Gulp of this category, the Quarter Pounder with Cheese. Yellow Brick Road hums "Wish You Were Here" in second place.

THE BIG FRIENDLY CORPORATION
This coed quintet bends and contorts indie pop the way a prism does a ray of light, refracting everything in several brightly hued directions. Set against a purring bed of warm electronics, the band crafts equally sweet and sardonic missives that alternate between blown kisses and kiss-offs. The band's tunes are populated by drunk girls and service workers, all looking for something that they seldom seem to find: solace, peace of mind, a good friend. But the group's buoyant whir never hardens into cynicism. "I still believe that good people get the best of life in the end," frontman Ryan Marth sings at the album's conclusion, and whether he's right or wrong, it's hard not to hum along.
