Best of Las Vegas 2009 : Locations : Best Picnic Spot

Reader Pick
RED ROCK CANYON NATIONAL CONSERVATION AREA
West of Las Vegas off Charleston Boulevard

What better to do at a national conservation area than unwrap your processed food and dig in? Picnic tables surround the visitor center and trail heads. But please remember to clean up after yourself. Mount Charleston climbs to second place.

Staff Pick
SPRING MOUNTAIN RANCH STATE PARK
West of Las Vegas off Charleston Boulevard

We keep driving a little farther past the exit from the Red Rock scenic loop for a place to set our red checkered blanket. The state park has a huge green lawn partly shaded by oak and cottonwood trees, with cooling breezes from the nearby canyons, even in August. (At 3,800 feet, Spring Mountain Ranch is 10 to 15 degrees cooler than most of the valley.)

Every Sunday at sunset on Oak Creek hiking trail all the hippies, new agers and anarchists of Las Vegas picnic with tons of Love and Peace. There is a drum circle that has been running for 17 years and dancers, chants and hoola-hoops. Come, bring a drum and goodies to share!
