Best of Las Vegas 2008 : People : Best Community Organization

Reader Pick
OPPORTUNITY VILLAGE
Opportunity Village bills itself as "Las Vegas' Favorite Charity." That certainly holds true with Review-Journal readers, who cite Opportunity Village as their favorite community group for the 11th consecutive year. And while Opportunity Village works to fulfill its mission of helping the developmentally disabled through vocational training, employment and social recreation services, it also reaches out to the entire Southern Nevada community. After all, what would the holidays be without the Magical Forest? (Last year's Santa Run also got everyone into the yuletide spirit.) But regardless of the season, the spirit of giving is a constant at Opportunity Village. Safe Nest, which provides emergency shelter for families fleeing domestic violence, settles into second place.

Staff Pick
FOUNDATION FOR AN INDEPENDENT TOMORROW
A hand, not a handout. That's the focus of Foundation for an Independent Tomorrow. The local nonprofit, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2007, empowers unemployed and underemployed Nevadans to obtain the skills needed to build their careers, support their families and declare permanent independence from handouts. In the past three years, FIT has spent more than $1 million to help train and place its clients. In the process, participants' salaries increase from less than $8,000 when they start to an average of $24,000 when they graduate. And that's the kind of return on investment that pays dividends for everyone.

The provide financial and social services to the underprivledged in the Las Vegas Community. I frequent their resale store which offers clean recycleable furniture/clothes and worthwhile merchandise to the community. This is a great organization which should be commended in the community.

Customer Service-EXCELLENT-polite and VERY courteous staff- a pleasure to talk to.When relatives from Big Bear and out of town come to visit-it is one of the places they MUST visit -always making a purchase.

E BUNNY is a 19 year old community organization that brings joy to homeless and underprivileged kids. Run by volunteers, this private charitable outreach program delivered 1300 Easter Baskets to kids in need last year!

S. Speck wrote on January 28, 2009 11:22 AM: My vote is for New Vista Emporium. Opportunity Village is too overated and they don't pay their workers much. New Vista really tries to provide a better life for people who are mentally challenged.
