Thinking of taking OTC weight loss products this holiday season? Don't
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning about more than two dozen weight-loss products, saying they contain undeclared ingredients that could pose a health risk. These undeclared ingredients range from a known carcinogen to an anti-seizure medication.

This in particular is alarming:

"These tainted weight loss products pose a great risk to public health because they contain undeclared ingredients and, in some cases, contain prescription drugs in amounts that greatly exceed their maximum recommended dosages," Dr. Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in a news release. "Consumers have no way of knowing that these products contain powerful drugs that could cause serious health consequences. Therefore, FDA is taking this action to protect the health of the American public."

The FDA said an analysis found that the undeclared ingredients in some of these products include sibutramine (a controlled substance), rimonabant (a drug not approved for marketing in the United States), phenytoin (an anti-seizure medication), and phenolphthalein (a solution used in chemical experiments and a suspected cancer-causing agent). Some of the amounts of active ingredients greatly exceed FDA-recommended levels, putting consumers' health at risk, the agency said.

And this:

The risks posed by these products can be serious, the FDA said. For instance, sibutramine, which was found in many of the products, can cause high blood pressure, seizures, palpitations, heart attack or stroke. The drug can also interact with other medications that patients may be taking and increase their risk of serious side effects. The safety of sibutramine also hasn't been determined for women who are pregnant or breast-feeding, or in children younger than 16 years of age, the agency said.

However, the action the FDA is taking, according to an ABC news report, has so far been limited to issuing a warning and ordering consumers who have used these products to stop taking them and see a physician. Did the FDA order these products removed from the shelves? Is there going to be an investigation into how prescription drugs and carcinogens got into OTC weight-loss products? The ABC report doesn't say.

The FDA has a list on its Web site of tainted products.

It never ceases to amaze me that people will pop a pill rather than modify their behaviors.

The ancient Greeks advocated diet and exercise for weight loss. The only way out is through which means there is no magic pill that is going to do the work for a person wishing to lose weight. Find a way of eating and an exercise program that works for you. Over time it will become a habit just like the sedentary and calorie rich life style became a habit. Diet, by the way, does mean way of life. Again the ancient Greeks knew whereof they spoke.

Each generation has its favorite brand or type of snake oil and in the current era that snake oil seems to be diet pills.
