I was too harsh this week when I picked on Digger, the cartoon mascot for Fox’s track-level camera.
My newest most annoying personality on Fox’s NASCAR team is Jeff Hammond. I guess he’s a nice guy. He was a great crew chief for Jeff Gordon.
But let’s spell his name HAMmond.
On Thursday afternoon I was at the Ultimate Fighting Championship gym near the Palms in Las Vegas, where Hammond, Kasey Kahne and David Reutimann were working with UFC greats Forrest Griffin and Wanderlei Silva. They were taping staged scenes to be used Sunday during Fox's broadcast of the Shelby 427 Sprint Cup race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Griffin and Silva are tremendous athletes with a great tolerance for pain as they resisted any urge to throw a rear naked joke on Hammond who — admittedly prodded by Fox producers — kept trying to be the center of attention.
It was just too much. And not very funny. Judge for yourself Sunday.
MAYFIELD JOINS LVRJ.COM
Five-time Cup winner Jeremy Mayfield today filed his first blog for lvrj.com/motorsports. A new one will be posted each day during the weekend. Best of all, he will file regularly throughout the season.
Also check out a video of Mayfield on our Web site. It captures the excitement in his eyes when he talks about being a first-time Cup team owner.
He has qualified for each of this year’s races and can make it 3-for-3 today.
Talk about a feel-good story. He didn’t have race cars a couple weeks before the Daytona 500.
A big toast of All Sport — his sponsor — for helping Mayfield continue to live his dream.
