FONTANA, CALIF. -- Las Vegan Brendan Gaughan has been a popular NASCAR driver regardless of the series.
Gaughan, a new blogger for lvrj.com/motorsports, raced in Saturday’s Nationwide race at Auto Club Speedway for Rusty Wallace Racing.
I stopped by his pit stall in before the race and was amazed that he had the biggest crowd of fans. Must have been four or five deep.
Very impressive.
Then I realized that Danica Patrick was pitted next to him.
At least Gaughan finished way ahead of her; he was 24th and she finished 31st.
WATCH FOR WAYNE NEWTON SIGHTINGS
Don’t be shocked if you see Las Vegas legend Wayne Newton at Las Vegas Motor Speedway next weekend during the NASCAR races.
He might be spotted helping to direct traffic, picking up trash or cleaning restrooms.
At least he won’t be singing the national anthem before the Shelby American Cup race or “Danke Schoen” in the Neon Garage.
Newton was sued for $3.35 million last week by Bruton Smith, founder/CEO of Speedway Motorsports Inc. that owns the speedway.
The lawsuit claims Newton is delinquent on a loan. It also says Smith is trying to foreclose on Newton’s ranch in Las Vegas. Smith also is trying to foreclose on the property.
Newton might offer to work off the debt.
BIG FIELDS FOR VEGAS
Forty-six drivers are entered for the Feb. 28 Sprint Cup race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and 51 are slated to compete in the preceding day’s Sam’s Town 300 Nationwide event.
NEW UNLV COACH AT LVMS
Bobby Hauck, the new UNLV football coach, will give the command to start engines before the Sam’s Town race at LVMS. The crowd of about 100,000 will be more than the total attendance he can expect to see during home games next season.
LVMS ADDS BIG OFF-ROAD RACE
The Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series will open its season March 6-7 on a new track being built at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The impressive track is being built by Lucas Oil Motorsports on a site formerly used for motocross racing.
The new, 1-mile purpose built track will feature the highest banked turn on the Lucas Oil Off Road circuit, according to Bob Patison, Lucas Oil executive vice president.
The circuit features 10 turns.
