NASCAR inspector's claim of racism has merit

Former NASCAR technical inspector Mauricia Grant filed a $225 million suit against NASCAR on Tuesday, alleging racial discrimination, sexual harassment and retaliatory termination.

I believe her accusations about discrimination and harassment, but don’t think she deserves that much in compensation.

Grant, who is black, was fired in October 2007, but NASCAR won’t say why. She started with the organization in January 2005.

NASCAR chairman Brian France denied Wednesday that she complained to her supervisors about the alleged behavior by some good old boys who worked with her in what as then the Busch Series.

France might not be a racist or sexist, but don’t rule out some of those who work for him.

I’ve heard one veteran Cup driver use the “N” word and doubt he’s the only bigot in the garage.

How many folks do you know who say they won’t consider voting for presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama because he is half Kenyan?

How many bigoted jokes do you receive in e-mails?

I grew up hearing anti-Semitic comments from people who didn’t know I was Jewish.

There is racism in NASCAR and most of America. If you don’t believe that then you're either living under a rock or as dumb as one.

Americans of African descent long have been part of professional drag racing as drivers, mechanics and officials. So don't tell me they aren't interested in racing.

NASCAR team owner Jack Roush, an experienced aviator, will perform a flyover in his P-51 before Saturday’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck race at Michigan International Speedway, which is near his home in Livonia, Mich.

This is the same Jack Roush who nearly died six years ago when he crashed a plane he was flying into a lake near Birmingham, Ala.

He was flying solo ... so low he hit the water.

Good thing the Michigan facility doesn’t have a body of water on the grounds.

How far away is Lake Michigan?

When will NASCAR stars quit whining?

It will be a hot issue in my Friday column in the Review-Journal and at ReviewJournal.com.

You are one of a very small minority of reporters/journalists who is not afraid to state/print the truth. I have been living in this country for 61 years, from Birmingham Al, to Los Angeles CA, to Chicago, To New York, to Houston TX, and I cannot find an area that is delivered from racism.
Good article.

Maybe there are racists in NASCAR but my problem ( as a female) with this "claim" is that she continued to put up with men allegedly exposing themselves etc to her. NO self respecting woman would EVER tolerate that in this day when all she had to do is file a complaint with both NASCAR and the NATIONAL Labor board at the same time yet she didnt she waited until MONTHS and MONTHS after her firing to file? I have one word BOGUS a self respecting woman would have eliminated offending parts faster than a 14 second pit stop.
The timing of this is very suspicious and also the fact she waited so long. Her claims are mostly centered on sexual harassment and to me she should have filed public complaints earlier and also FOUND A NEW JOB.. no she stayed and waited till after she was FIRED to file a suit... sounds politically motivated to me maybe Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson are involved

Read your columns about Hamlin, vickers and Grant. Transpose Hamlin/Vickers names with Grant's. If you can't stand your workplace atmosphere, get out and get another job. Noone held a gun to the head of any one of the three and said," you have to be here.' Whine, whine, whine. All three of them are full of it, I am white/female and if I were fired from a job, could I complain it was because of my age, race, sex instead of the fact that I just wasn't doing my job? Probsbly wouldn't get me anywhere. If Ms Grant's case is found to be without merit; will she be responsible for the court costs? I hope so.

Racism is alive and well in the USofA. Just go to any predominatley Black Church on any give sunday and you'll see and hear the evidence.

If I'm not mistaken, the courts threw out J. Jacksons lawsuit against NASCAR so I suspect that this one is just an aside to the one he filed.

I hope the truth comes out, either way.

Jeff you are exactly right about the racism and we are kidding ourselves if we think its going away anytime soon. What sets my teeth on edge is the I am a victim I deserve to be rich attitude that underlies this publicity stunt. Why has Ms. Grant waited so long to take action? That's the first question she needs to answer. Willy Ribbs tried to make it as a driver and didn't have the talent necessary. I believe Bill Lester could do great with the right backing behind him but at 47 most cup owners are going to automatically dismiss him as too old. Its a sad world we live in when someone who does not have the talent to compete in a sport thinks they have a right to be compensated by the sport for their lack of talent. I think I'll go sue the NFL since I didn't get drafted out of high school to play football.

I don't agree with NB RaceFan that "no self-respecting woman would tolerate [sexual harassment] in this day." Plenty of self-respecting women, historically and today, avoid confronting the issue of sexual harassment in the workplace precisely because of the way RaceFan responded. Doubting the timing or authenticity of Grant's claim is further proof that not only is racism alive and well in this country, but that sexism (even women can be sexist) is too. Grant's claims may be found to be false and she may not deserve such compensation, but she has every right to bring forth charges of anything that she believes violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. That may be her best method of demonstrating significant self-respect. Had she just filed a complaint initially, she, like many before her, might have just been brushed off as a frigid, uncool B-word.
