Editorial board: Sue Lowden discusses the issues

Sue Lowden, who is considered by many to be the front runner in the GOP primary for the chance to face off against Harry Reid despite polls showing her in a dead heat with Danny Tarkanian, stopped by the Review-Journal Tuesday afternoon for a far-ranging session with the editorial board.

We have posted online several brief clips on various topics addressed: Harry Reid, immigration, health care, character and security.

She admitted that one reason she is considered a front runner by many of the national political pundits is that she has hired for her campaign some of the people who helped John Thune defeat Tom Daschle, then the Senate majority leader from South Dakota. Money will be a factor in the this race and much of it will be coming from out of state, because of Reid's high profile nationally.

If there were a theme for the meeting it might have been: evolution. To explain how she evolved from once contributing to Reid to now opposing him, she said he had evolved from a Blue Dog Democrat to a liberal. To explain how she had evolved from voting for abortion rights to now being pro life, she noted that the country had evolved to the point that pregnancy out of wedlock was no longer such an awful stigma. She did not really have an answer for my question about whether that might not be so good for society considering the staggering number of out-of-wedlock births in this country.

She also seemed startled when Vin Suprynowicz, who beat me to the question by a fraction of a second, challenged her assumption that no one could oppose requiring insurers to cover people with pre-existing conditions, which would drive up the premium costs for those who faithfully carried insurance while healthy. Lowden responded with a discussion of portability. But her suggestion to break up the health care legislation into bite-sized pieces instead of 2,000-page behemoths made sense.

Lowden also had an amusing answer as to how she would respond if someone tries through innuendo or accusation to say her husband's rise in the gaming industry coincided with the mob's entanglement in Las Vegas casinos. Harry Reid was chairman of the Gaming Commission when her husband Paul got his first license, she notes.

Thank you for the quick look at Sew Lowden. I might also say I liked the format in which you showed her positions: Quick links of excerpts of various topics. It gave me a feel of her positions and a preview of the campaign.

In your concern about the loss of readership to your paper, you might find some way to transcribe the format to print. It's something I would read.

DISCLAIMER: I remain a card-carrying ACLU Libertarian and in no way agree with Ms. Lowden's position or her statements. (Heh).

So, let me get this straight; Sue Lowden blames criminal behavior on the "cops"?

Can't wait to hear her response to why crime in Las Vegas is what it is; 'the cops"?

"Grown ups" say the dangest things!

There is a reason why Lowden was a one-term state senator. Her Republican senate colleagues found out she could not be trusted. Unless they have very short memories, they will not support her in the primary.

Republicans in Nevada do not support this woman one bit!

I'm excited that a flip flopper like Lowden could be the nominee, helps Reid

Sue can finance her own campaign out of the Lowden spare change fund. Always a useful tool in the country where you get the best politicians money can buy.

Are you kidding me? Sue Lowden, where are your conservative principles? Where is your concern for the rule of law? Everyone can agree on "existing conditions" for health care? As to illegals, how about those that take welfare, health care, etc.; in other words, DRAIN OUR RESOURCES? Can we round them up and send them home?

Don't think that we want "anybody but Harry". We want politicians that believe in the constitution and will fight to preserve (and restore!) our freedoms and liberty.

Thomas, better get Danny T.

Areas of interest that weren't discussed:

Spending Trillion$

Global Warming (Cap and Trade)

the Green Revolution

The IRS and the rising tax burden

Drilling for oil, HERE AND NOW, and the folly of ethanol

Unfunded mandates

Pork barrel spending and bribes (same thing, actually)

Athos, what gives you the idea that Danny Tarkanian has any real conservative principles?

If not Danny, then on down the list to Sharron Angle. We need to keep going until we find someone diametrically opposite of Harry Reid. An Upright and Freedom loving candidate. A north to his south.

You with me, so far?

By the way, I hate Brady law, too; but that was from 2006, and I'd like to hear how he feels about the rest of the issues, also.

Sue is absolutely the front runner...Great political savvy...Has the ability to raise money....Little if anything negative about her...Appeals to a great cross-section of voters...Breaking health care into segments ok...Much better than that proposed by Demos...Politically above the fray...and will not personally attack those who oppose her as a candidate...She is a breath of fresh air in a cesspool of political bull....! Wish she would hammer harder on the political pimping/adultery Reid committed in buying Senator Ben Nelson's health care reform vote...This adultery was committed against the people of Nevada as well as those of the nation...She is heads and shoulders above those in the primary...She will VAPORIZE HER OPPONENT IN THE GENERAL ELECTION....My words not hers..

Your evaluation of her positions seemed fair... but alluding to a time when Reid was Chairman of the Gaming Commission and the innuendo having to do with Paul, could have been said of anyone licensed during that period of time...Disappointing to see the observation made, which painted all involved during that time with the
same ugly black brush...She did though make a great response...
Overall I rate the Editorial board's review of the issues a resounding A-

So you are saying then that you would trust a candidate who loved Brady law in 2006 but then flipped and hated Brady law in 2010? How would feel if you then voted that candidate to six years in the senate and they fell back in love with Brady law in 2014? Once a flip flopper always a flip flopper and you can’t trust a flip flopper on any of the issues no matter what they tell you to your face today because some candidates say anything to get elected.

How is Harry Reid not a 'freedom loving candidate?' Let's look at "Freedom:" It was the Republicans that were against Doctor Assisted Suicide. They were against us buying drugs from Canada. They are the ones against legalized prostitution on Clark County. They are the ones that tried stopping Internet Poker. They are the ones against a woman's rights. And the freedom of buying medical insurance?

I'll take Harry Reid.

Tom, did you ask Sue about ripping off the Ron Paul supporters at the state convention?

Just left Danny Tarkanian's web site. Read his stands on the issues. On paper, I like what I read.

Tom, could you get Danny in for an interview, like you did Sue Lowden?

I was not impressed with Sue's answers.

Let me be perfectly clear. This is NOT about Republican vs Democrat. This is about Freedom vs Socialism.

Dr. Utopia has awoken the sleeping giant. We can see the writing on the wall. It's $12+Trillion debt, that our rulers are ADMITTING! There is WHO KNOWS how much unfunded liability coming.

Common sense is screaming about 70+million baby boomers retiring, and what that will do to our debt. For those still living in the Democrat Dream World, WAKE UP!! Mordor is coming!
