Berkley eyes Ensign's travails and his Senate seat

It's not just Republicans keeping a close watch on the travails of Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev. Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., says she, too, is aware fallout from an affair scandal threatens the career of the once-popular Ensign.

On Thursday Berkley told the editorial board of the Review-Journal that Ensign's problems change the calculus behind the process she'll use to determine to run for the seat. (View video)

"The circumstances have changed and I would take a good look at it," Berkley said.

The popular Las Vegas congresswoman also acknowledged she has a relatively secure seat right now and some plum committee assignments.

"I would be loath to give up what I have," she said.

During the meeting at the newspaper, Berkley also said she's considering holding a town hall meeting in October to discuss health care reform.

Berkley was fresh off an appearance before the Clark County Democratic Black Caucus on Wednesday. At the event, anti-health reform protesters confronted Berkley, who is already scheduled to hold a town hall event by telephone this month.

They urged her, mostly with boos, to hold a live event on the subject.

"I've got the message and I've got it loud and clear," said Berkley, who interacted extensively with the protesters before the event.

On Thursday at the meeting with the newspaper, she said she's considering a live event.

"After my experience last night, I decided I will do a town hall," she said.

She said it would most likely occur in October, once there are more specific health reform proposals on the table.

"I want to wait until I have something," she said.

I don't think so Berkley. First of all, let's just say, you need to get over the hump with the Health Care Reform issue first..don't be a coward to hold tele-town hall meetings like your colleague Harry Reid. Do it in person. By the way, why don't you run against Reid? He might be very vulnerable in 2010 and lose his seat...so, you might as well.

Please! For the love of God! Let there be a 3rd party from which to choose on the ballot. Please let there be an Independent. I will never again vote for another pos republican't or democrap ever. I am sick of the political back biting and pettiness. These guys are like the War of the Roses. They will destroy the country trying to take eachother down. And I hope to God we sack up and vote them all out next time around.

We need to throw out most of the incumbents. Shelley, Ensign, Reid, Titus and Heller all voted to give tax dollars to private corporations. This is transferring the wealth from tax payers to bankers on wall street. They have done nothing to help stop the looting of the national treasury. She and her colleagues are a disgrace to this nation. We need patriots in Washington that will stand up for the rights of the American people. We need people that will not be afraid to stand up to the lobbyist and throw those in jail who violate laws and make a mockery of the American taxpayer. We need Patriots that will go to Washington and serve ONE term then come home and allow another to go and serve. This Idea of creating a Legacy for oneself must stop. We the people must stand united and take this country back through the ballot box. We must not let issues like Health Care divide us. If we don't fix the economy, we will not be able to afford health care, a military, or food for that matter. You see if we don't stop the looting of the treasury, then nothing will matter anyway. Wake up America and lets band together to recruit patriots to serve in the U.S. Congress!

Thanks to gerrymandering, Ms. Berkley has a safe district full of union sheep and people looking for the good life without working for it. She has lost touch with reality and thinks the rest of the state is the same. She readily admitted she didn't read the stimulus or the budget bill she voted for and she thinks she is ready to be a senator?

I agree that our current senators have set the bar so low you couldn't limbo under it but let's get real. Shelley Berkley is a Barbara Boxer wannabe but not as smart.

"Berkley ... interacted extensively with the protesters before the event."

She's got brass ones. Ensign, meanwhile, is hiding out in Fernley.

In what interest does the democratic (oxymoron) black caucus include the young (majority white) women wearing pink t-shirts representing planned parenthood have in common? Answer: Shelly Berkley. I was there. I observed and I am interested in who supports her nanny state. Why do strong union members want a nanny state? Please, not on account of the underpriveleged. I am not buying that.
