Grant Hewitt, a Republican consultant who helped steer Gov. Jim Gibbons to victory in 2006, has signed on as campaign manager for former state Sen. Joe Heck, who plans to challenge Gibbons in the primary as he runs for reelection next year.
Heck announced the hire in a news release this morning.
Hewitt served as Gibbons' deputy campaign manager in 2006, then moved to the Nevada Republican Party, where he was co-executive director. After the election, he took a job in government affairs for Mesquite-based Black Gaming.
His most recent gig was managing an unsuccessful congressional campaign in New Mexico, that of Republican Ed Tinsley, who lost the longtime Republican stronghold 2nd District to Democrat Harry Teague by 10 percentage points.
"Grant brings to the table an extensive blend of political experience, coupled with a firm understanding of the unique issues and challenges currently facing Nevadans," Heck said in the release. "His vision and expertise will enable us to build a successful organization and propel the campaign forward."
Hewitt, in the release, said he is "honored to be able to bring my skills and experience to a campaign I so firmly believe in." He said Heck, a doctor, Army reservist and business owner, "has the leadership experience to bring about true change in Nevada."
Heck is one of two announced Republican challengers to Gibbons. The other is North Las Vegas Mayor Mike Montandon.
