Reid says Evangelical Lutherans support government health care reform

Count the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America among supporters of health care reform that includes action by the government.

In a letter today to Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., the church said members at its churchwide assembly in Minneapolis voted 799 to 126 in favor of a resolution that, "conveyed its sense of urgency that the Congress pass an acceptable health care reform bill as soon as possible." And, "thousands of people across America are losing their insurance coverage every day."

The resolution itself called for, in part, "a comprehensive approach to health care as a shared endeavor among individuals, churches, government and the wider society."

According to the letter to Reid from Larry Struve, director of advocacy for Nevada for the church, the 1,045 members at the assembly represent 65 synods, more than 10,000 congregations and more than 4.7 million church members.

1 Response to "Reid says Evangelical Lutherans support government health care reform"
The ELCA leadership does not speak -- in large part -- for its members. Most people in the pews don't support healthcare reform as Mr. Reid has outlined it. If the church is so in favor of healthcare reform they should drop their tax exempt status to help pay the freight.
