Gangsterism at Planned Parenthood

The fit that hit the shan last week between The Komen Foundation and Planned Parenthood is well documented. The take on the whole deal that I think has the issue pegged best comes from Daniel Foster of the National Review Online. You can find it here and, as always with the Complete Las Vegan, you are free to agree or disagree as you like. (Of course, another four years of the "We-Know-Best" Obama crowd and there's no guarantee of that. Take advantage of your freedom while you can.)

Anyway, one of the passages in the piece is this jewel:

"You know, I’m not a big fan of Komen’s brandification of breast cancer, I dislike seeing pink ribbons plastered over everything, and I think Planned Parenthood is real swell, abortions and all. So I’m not especially inclined to come to Komen’s aid. But I’ll be damned if this doesn’t look a bit like PP throwing its weight around, knocking a few pieces of china off the shelves, sending a message to its other donors: 'Nice foundation you got there. Wouldn’t want anything to, you know, happen to it.'”

How so very true.

How could anyone possibly read this language and NOT conclude that Sherm is ultimately after shutting down both abortion AND birth control?

PS - just out of curiosity, Sherm, have you ever asked your wife what SHE thinks about this puritan moral utopia of yours, in which MALE moralists reinstate the "Tyranny of Biology"? I am reminded of the incident a few years ago, in which the Scientologist Tom Cruise criticized Brooke Shields for taking medications against post-partum depression. As Brooke Shields so admirably responded, "when Mr. Cruise has experienced post-partum depression for himself, then he will be in a position to criticize my decisions."

Tom, He can only shut down abortion when the mythological christian god stops performing them.

Written by: Winston.Smith on Saturday, Feb. 04, 2012 at 11:21 AM -- Report abuse
No, of course it is not impossible to be for contraception but against abortion. But if you are, then you will need to explain what people are supposed to do if the contraception fails. But that is not what I said, anyway. What I said was it SOUNDS like Sherm is against both abortion AND contraception. If that is not what he intended, then he is welcome to correct me. But it is a legitimate interpretation of his blanket, uncritical condemnation of Planned Parenthood as a "gangster organization". Not to mention that apparently, according to Sherm, the only legitimate function PP serves is breast cancer screening. NOT providing contraception support.

The Komen Organization is tainted with a bunch of Palinites and Birthers. A new organization should be started. Trade with Cuba should be opened up so people can get inexpensive abortions there.

I hope this shows people who might believe that Planned Parenthood is about abortion the truth, that this organization is really about giving women not just choices, but more importantly, access, particularly poor women, to health care they would not otherwise receive.

And I'll admit, the pink shoes and wristbands during an NFL game took some getting used to but if it helps saves women's lives, I am all for it.

It is never a good a idea to politicize people's lives, whether or not people live or die based on some people's partisan beliefs. And I know, the argument can be made these kinds of political decisions which affect people's lives happen all of the time, but this was just really over the top. I have no idea why the Susan B. Koman Foundation, which is a great organization, made their original decision not to fund Planned Parenthood anymore but I was glad to see how quickly they realized they had made a terrible mistake. So good for them for that.

1/4 of the 1 million+ abortions a year are performed by Planned Parenthood.
Written by: SgtRock on Saturday, Feb. 04, 2012 at 11:20 PM -- Report abuse
That's the problem with organizations like Komen and United Way: You give your money and they decide how to distribute it. They don't do any of the actual charitable work themselves. As a result, a few loons can keep worthy organizations from getting any money.

Far better to find out a little something about individual organizations and then give them the money directly. That way, if something like abortion upsets you so much you can be certain the people who are getting your money are doing something you approve of.

But two things here. First, if the Komenorganization had to backtrack on withholding money for PP, then it's obvious the large majority of its donors support PP. Second, if Komen got some of your money, Mr. Frederick, and then some tiny portion of it went for abortion services, and you are upset about that, you have nobody to blame but yourself. Do your homework before donating your money.

Exactly right, John F. I would only add that if Sherm does in fact ONLY object to abortion, and supports the idea of contraception, then he has no one but himself to blame if his readership infers otherwise from his shrill, uconditional attacks on the ENTIRE Planned Parenthood organization. If his political opponents succeed in portraying him as against women's rights, then it is because of things he himself said, and NOT because of some satanic left-wing socialist conspiracy.

For Shermy and privaterock, http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001488.htm Not that THEY will read and understand the implications for their belief in an invisible guy with a beard. "Causes
Most miscarriages are caused by chromosome problems that make it impossible for the baby to develop. Usually, these problems are unrelated to the mother or father's genes.

Other possible causes for miscarriage include:

Drug and alcohol abuse
Exposure to environmental toxins
Hormone problems
Infection
Obesity
Physical problems with the mother's reproductive organs
Problem with the body's immune response
Serious body-wide ( systemic) diseases in the mother (such as uncontrolled diabetes)
Smoking
It is estimated that up to half of all fertilized eggs die and are lost (aborted) spontaneously, usually before the woman knows she is pregnant. Among those women who know they are pregnant, the miscarriage rate is about 15-20%. Most miscarriages occur during the first 7 weeks of pregnancy. The rate of miscarriage drops after the baby's heart beat is detected.

The risk for miscarriage is higher in women:

Older age, with increases beginning by 30, becoming greater between 35 and 40, and highest after 40
Who have had previous miscarriages"

mcshaffer, you really got us there.

Miscarriages are EXACTLY LIKE abortions.

Yep....you are 100% correct.

A woman having a miscarrage is exactly like a abortion thug inducing birthing so that baby (that would survive outside the womb) will travel into the birth canal so that he/she may drill a hole in the baby's head to suck the brains out.

Yep....that is exactly like a miscarrige.

Hey....I think you need a refill on kool-aid. It is getting kind a low.

The real facts are, the Komen Foundation made a mistake, which was evident by how quickly they reversed themselves. People, and not just women but people got real outraged real fast and we saw what happened.

And people, politicians, need to start standing-up for Planned Parenthood and informing people what they really do.

It is amazing how a reported one anti-abortion zealot with some influence in an otherwise very reputable and life-saving organization can do such damage to this same organization.

Just remember, it is this same kind of anti-abortion extremism which convinces people to kill the "abortionists," like Dr. Edward Tiller.
Written by: Yeager on Sunday, Feb. 05, 2012 at 7:55 PM -- Report abuse
And by 'extremism,' I mean using terms like "Gangsterism" when in any kind of way describing Planned Parenthood. Using that word to describe Planned Parenthood pretty much defines the word 'extremism.'

Any my evidence? Did anyone notice how quickly the Komen Foundation reversed their partisan decision to not provide grants to Planned Parenthood anymore?

Private whatever, How do you explain your mythological god aborting all those babies? After all, since your creator of the universe has absolute power he must have either allowed this to happen or caused it...making him the ultimate abortion provider.
Written by: MSchaffer on Sunday, Feb. 05, 2012 at 9:23 PM -- Report abuse
"Gangsterism?" Hardly. It wasn't PP that got the foolish policy changed, it was the people who volunteered and donated to the Komen Foundation. Those people who supported Komen expected that their efforts were for cancer-related work, not for politics. Having revealed themselves as political creatures, the entire board of Komen needs to resign immediately. That's the only chance for the foundation to regain any credibility. If that's not done immediately, the damage will be permanent. With that responsibility off their shoulders, the board members can go off and found a radical right PAC and solicit contributions honestly.

Men and womem caused that to happen because they chose to be sinners.

SgtRock: Wow. Really? When I was an undergraduate in geology, we were taught that the modern science of seismology originated after the great Lisbon earthquake of 1755 (if I remember correctly), in response to the way many European and American ministers insisted that the earthquake was caused by God punishing all those Portuguese sinners. How interesting that you should say very much the same thing as those ministers, two hundred and fifty years later!

PS - SgtRock, let me ask you again, since you bring it up. History is very clear, that up until fairly recently the typical infant mortality rate was around 70%. Which, for the mathematically challenged, means that seven out of ten babies usually died before their first birthday. Modern medicine has changed that, at least in developed countries. So why WOULDN'T lowering the infant mortality rate be just as much a sin as abortion, since both interfere with God's will in the birth process?
Written by: Tom.Reynolds on Monday, Feb. 06, 2012 at 6:57 AM -- Report abuse
Faith is how one believes. People can believe anything that they desire to. Who knows if there is a God or not a God or what is the correct faith. That is up to each person to decide and guess at.

Many religions state that bad things happen on this planet because humans choose with their free will to sin and therefore the perfect paradise that they were in now no longer exists and we will in a world were bad things happen.

It does not neccesary mean that one is getting punished directly by an earthquake or whatever for conducting particular sin.

I am sure that some people believe that some earthquakes are where people are getting directly punished by God.

Some believe that the whole mankind is being punished collectively for the collect sins of mankind.

All that just deals with faith which is how one believes..

Remember it is you kool-aid heads that brought up the subject of God and religion.

Don't any all excited if you don't like the responses.

However, Obama should not be using the force of the government to make people go against their religion when they are excerising their religion.

That is wrong and against the Constitution.

Also aborting 1 million+ babies a year can't be good thing.

Don't rile the Gods of Abortion on Demand feminism. Cecile Richards makes more money a year than Komen donated, but that doesn't matter, does it?

No one quits the feminist mob, and lives to tell about it.

No one.

And Cecile Richards "non profit" salary would put her firmly in the 1% class, wouldn't it?

In fact, the average salary of the top eight executives at PP is $270,000.

Us taxpayers are really getting a lot of "bang" for our buck, aren't we?

Mark, I've known many couples that anguish over miscarriages when they wanted to have a baby. The emotional toil over losing a baby is devastating. Some blame God, some blame themselves, the healthy ones heal and accept this as "just the way it is". My heart and prayers go out to them.

Having said that, Cecile Richards, the head of PP, earns close to $400K/yr, and PP receives $360 million from the Feds (that's my tax dollars funding a procedure that I call murder).

Komen deals in breast cancer awareness. They wanted their $580K donation to promote breast cancer cures, and they didn't see that being the most effective way going to PP. It's Komen's money, they should be allowed to give it to whomever would promote THEIR cause.

What I'm seeing is a Mafia style hit done on Komen by PP, for daring to stop their donation. I liken it to "protection money", and I'm not the only one pointing this out.

I don't understand what your last post had to do with this "strong arm" action of Cecile Richards of PP against Komen. I would think that they would be on the same page, namely, doing what's best for women.

This appears to me as if PP is doing what's best for the high earning heads of PP. Don't you agree?
Written by: Athos on Tuesday, Feb. 07, 2012 at 1:15 PM -- Report abuse
No I don't agree with your mischaracterization of PP. Why should I? As to abortion, a fetus is not a human being and if you try to characterize it as such where do you draw the line? When a woman ovulates is she losing a human life? When sperm don't fertilize an egg is that losing a human life? Most pregnancies don't make it to term and if you knew biology you would understand why this is so. To force women to have babies they can't afford or don't want will lead to much cruelty but you only care about life until birth then it is too bad and you are on your own.
