It's the pensions, stupid

Let's start the week off thinking about what should be a big issue in Nevada next year: public employee pensions.

Nevada and every other state in the nation has reached a tipping point on outrageous public employee pension and benefit obligations.

Here, for example, is a worthy thinker from New York where residents there face the laying off of thousands of teachers, jacking up fees for government services while at the same time reducing said services. It's getting ugly quick.

And, if I may say so myself, it's also worth revisiting this piece on the proper solution.

Let's start the week off thinking about what should be a big issue in Nevada next year: public employee pensions.

Gee, and we wanted to start the week off talking about the state giveaways to corporations; no bid contracts; top heavy managements and the Tax Cuts for the Rich. Those aren’t the 'big issues?' They seem to be in other publications' news cycles. Your misdirection about our budget problems being fair pay to state employees is reminiscent of your continual attack of our Senator Reid, or President Obama's economic plan that's pulling us out of your recession.

Maybe next week we'll start off with a discussion of how quickly our local economy is picking up these last three months and how we've seen a 13% increase in gaming profits over last year. Your continual dumping on workers is getting tiring.

Maybe your burning question of th eweek shoud be how can we improve the educaton system in Nevada so we can attract more than minimum wage service industries?

Great idea. How many more Mariachi teachers do we need to achieve economic diversification?

Please discuss how the State of Nevada allows workers to include all O/T into their pension calculation. Shouldn't the pension be calculated on base pay only?

The NvPERS , public employee retirement, is solvent. You can look at the website

http://www.nvpers.org/

In some states, the pensions and benefits have gone liberal, which means they are unpaid liabilities. Nevada is fortunate to have a solvent benifit system.

Now, Federal employee pensions are ridiculous and have gone liberal. When I say 'gone liberal', it means that they are not properly funded and have caused a permanent unfunded liabilty.

The only federal benefits I agree with are for servicemen and women. Screw politicians, they can afford the same benefits as the citizens.

how many vindictive, washed up ex-publishers does Stephens media need to carry? If the answer is one then you're a lucky guy, Sherm.

Just to rub it in all the Reid cheerleaders, Reid proves without a doubt he was a lying, backdoor dealing, lobby bought, corporate owned snakish lawyer re-elected by the spineless crowd...Read on...

You might think Simon supports Reid's efforts to legalize online poker, but he's critical of it, because Reid wants to continue to banish existing sites, like PokerStars and FullTiltPoker. Reid wants to legalize online poker only for casinos, like MGM and Harrah's (his constituents and campaign donors).

"I think it's the most obvious, corrupt, terrible thing I've ever heard of," says Simon, a Democrat who has so much money, he self-funds his acclaimed Sam Simon Foundation for rescue dogs, which accepts not one penny in contributions.

A step toward true progress, overturn the unconstitutional act of health insurance requirements. Yea for personal liberty!

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A federal judge declared the Obama administration's health care law unconstitutional Monday, siding with Virginia's attorney general in a dispute that both sides agree will ultimately be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Great idea. How many more Mariachi teachers do we need to achieve economic diversification?

About as many as Senator Ensign hired into needless government jobs to keep them quiet?

Please discuss how the State of Nevada allows workers to include all O/T into their pension calculation. Shouldn't the pension be calculated on base pay only?

I think so. But you'll have to ask the politicians that negotiated it.

In some states, the pensions and benefits have gone liberal, which means they are unpaid liabilities.

Uh, that's not what Liberal means. It's what state politician's negotiate.

Reid proves without a doubt he was a lying, backdoor dealing, lobby bought, corporate owned snakish lawyer re-elected by the spineless crowd

Then you should have no trouble proving that. Nobody else has been able to.

Reid wants to continue to banish existing sites, like PokerStars and FullTiltPoker.

They're not banished, I play on PokerStars. You keep getting bad information. Was it from the RJ or Fox?

"I think so. But you'll have to ask the politicians that negotiated it."

Which are democrats. So they went liberal with benefits, meaning they are unfunded liabilities.

"Then you should have no trouble proving that. Nobody else has been able to."

The proof is his actions. Try uncrossing your eyes.

BUZZZZ! Wrong! It was politicians. That's a bipartisan act.

Ah! The old, "No, I can't prove it so I'll just make phony accusations," statement.

"BUZZZZ! Wrong! It was politicians. That's a bipartisan act."

--That statement is correct. Would like to see you use less political party blame and more legislated blame yourself.

"Ah! The old, "No, I can't prove it so I'll just make phony accusations," statement."

--Hmm, that one is true too. The comment was based of opinion though. Would like to see you use less political party blame and more legislated blame yourself.

Ah, I just reposted a quote made. It is a man's opinion on internet gamble that, uses internet gambling. I would take his opinion over yours Jerry. Unless you own one of those gambling sites????? In that case, hey buddy, can you hook me up with some credits?

Jerry - here's some info that you need to continue your lovefest for the unholy trinity of OBAMA/REID/PELOSI. The WSJ has reported that the first QTR of Fical 2011 (Oct.-Dec.2010) will post a higher deficit than the highest YEARLY deficit ever posted from the eight years of the BUSH Presidency. And Bush's deficit was after funding two wars, lowering the tax rate for ALL Americans (including you), after spending records about of $$ for AIDS research in Africa, etc. Now this ADMIN record deficits produced 9.8% unemployment, record windfalls for auto unions, record number of housing foreclosures, and about 10 states going to be bankrupt!! Now that's a record to be proud of!! Don't you think?? And PS this has nothing to do with you ranting about tax cuts for the RICH!!!

Ah, I just reposted a quote made.

Right. One you found in the R-J, like I said.

It is a man's opinion on internet gamble that, uses internet gambling. I would take his opinion over yours Jerry.

Yet I'm right. What does that tell you?

The ones that saved us from a depression and are pulling us out of the recession? What do you see wrong with the fact they're doing that?

The WSJ has reported that the first QTR of Fical 2011 (Oct.-Dec.2010) will post a higher deficit than the highest YEARLY deficit ever posted from the eight years of the BUSH Presidency.

What's your point? The Republicans just negotiated to increase it even further than when Bush was in.

And Bush's deficit was after funding two wars,

No, he did NOT fund the wars. That's the problem.

lowering the tax rate for ALL Americans (including you), after spending records about of $$ for AIDS research in Africa, etc.

Right; and don't forget he spent on Medicare D, too; all unbudgeted. You find something good in that? He increased the national debt over $5 trillion dollars when he could have budgeted for it.

Now this ADMIN record deficits produced 9.8% unemployment,..

Wrong; the deficits did not produce the unemployment. Did you get this bad information from the R-J, too?

It's big fat overpaid do nothings like yourself insisting that you should not have to pay any taxes that are ruining our country. Not public workers, the huge majority of whom are working hard for peanuts compared to you and your pals and supporting the economy.

Jack, I would like to see proof that any republican in office said there should be no taxes, what so ever. Your argument is totally made up.

Jerry - my POINT is that since the DEMs took power in the Congress we had trillion dollars of debt - since Obama became Pres we have record deficits - And again you keep giving us the stuff from the BUSH yrs. That's history the question is HOW WILL THE DEMS STOP THIS DEFICIT SPENDING. Apparently not by the $1.1T budget they plan on voting on in this lame duck session. So if they do pass & Obama signs then that proves he wants a SOCIALIST GOV'T because our republic will collaspe under this debt and then he can declare himself socialist president for life!!
