ObamaCare: A disaster in waiting

Last Friday President Barack Obama tried to wipe off the muck on his face after falling in it over ObamaCare by forcing religious institutions to sin in the form of providing free contraception and abortion services.

It's unknown just exactly what the president's new "compromise" deal is other than, magically, religious organization won't pay for the contracepttion/abortion services directly, but only indirectly.

You don't have to be quick-as-a-wink to figure out how that went over.

The U.S. Catholic church greeted the "compromise" as even more of an insult and a clear indication that this president doesn't get it when it comes to guarding freedom of religion and people of conscience.

(As an aside, Sen. Harry Reid has so far supported the president on this abortion stance. It further draws attention to what must be a widening gap between Sen. Reid and his church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.)

The Complete Las Vegan draws your attention to MSNBC's "Morning Joe" for an excellent discussion from both points of view. It's a few minutes long, so stick with it.

Toward the end you will find Jim Cramer chime in on a point that I figure will be a big issue as the year progresses: The negative effect ObamaCare will have on jobs and the economy. Cramer warns clearly that the primary promise of ObamaCare -- that it will be good for the people and the economy -- is likely not true. It's going to result in higher health costs, lower quality care and fewer jobs.

I know our insurance cost went up, company wide. In fact one division would have shown a several million dollar profit if it were not for the health insurance costs. Instead that division showed a 2 million dollar loss. My employer uses a self insured health plan. That means they fund the plan each year in advance and add to it if needed. Our costs almost doupled this year. Thanks Obamacare.

But Sherm, just like high energy prices (and gasoline) are NECESSARY for this administration to wean us from foreign oil, Ø isn't concerned with higher health costs, lower quality care and fewer jobs (except government UNION jobs!)

His vision of a new America is NOT my vision. And he's never wavered from his core beliefs. That's why we have such rabid posters, and a very protective MSM, that labors night and day, preventing the people from seeing this man as he really is.

But it's impossible to hide $TRILLION budget deficits, 4 years running, isn't it?

Thank you senator Reid and president Obama for sticking up for womens healthcare...no church has any right to dictate what my healthcare should be. Sherm..Obama care does not cover abortion....the morning after pill keeps you from getting pregnant ...does not cause abortion..anyway abortion is legal and it should be covered, but it isn't......If the repubs want to run on a platform that would ban BC....good luck with that.

Last Friday President Barack Obama tried to wipe off the muck on his face after falling in it over ObamaCare by forcing religious institutions to sin in the form of providing free contraception and abortion services.

Seems you better wipe it off your face Sherman; The religious institutions' insurance will, in fact, be providing free contraception and abortions services after all. They just won't pay their fair share.

As far as ObamaCare; sorry, Sherman, (and xfmrh) you're wrong here, too. This year was the smallest increase in healthcare cost in the last 10 years; 4%.

You two are going to have to try serving a difference kind of right-wing cool aid to your easily fooled readers; you and Rush Limbaugh are just too easy to see through, nowadays.

Program is working good and getting better. Ask the people that got the insurance through HSA for people with pre-existing conditions. We heard the Republicans solution at the debate: "...let them die! "

Too bad Jesus kicked over the money-changer's stand in the temple, that throws a monkey wrench into the Ayran Rand philosophy of the like of Paul Von Ryan (who gets his insurance through the government.)

BTW what insurance company would insure you with your pre-existing conditions? Guess that is why the RJ has "Shermocare" for you.

Health insurance rates are up. Health care spending grew by only 4.4 percent, but this is because utilization is down due to unemployment and the recession.

http://blog.heritage.org/2012/01/11/health-spending-down%E2%80%94because-people-are-avoiding-care/

As person quoted in the above piece says: Obama administration “really can’t claim any credit unless it’s to say, ‘We broke the economy and you can thank us for that.’ ”

I think you have your priorities out of order, Vicar Frederick. If you want to pick a cause, perhaps you might consider helping protect our kids from child molestation and rape by priests.

Sherm: Right now most families are having a very difficult time just feeding, clothing & sheltering the children they now have. How in the world do you expect them to take care of additional mouths & don't tell me "God will provide". Utimately, the taxpayers will have to help. ANd...who are you and any men to tell women they should not have access to contraceptives. That is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS. And...I would much rather my tax dollars go to help women with their health & family planning issues than spend those dollars on war, over-the-line defense spending, and giving those who are wealthy extra tax breaks. KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF WOMEN'S HEALTH CHOICES!!!!!! You claim it is a 1st amendment issue & you are right--however you have the wrong "right". It is keeping the religious groups from telling us what to do, not what government is telling the church. Pres. Obama has already compromised with church leaders on that issue.
Also, our founders put the first amendment in our Constitution to keep establishing any religion that could tell us what we could and couldn't do. I personally have a serious issue with religions that have all men at the top of the hierarchy and then these men want to tell women what to do.

If the Catholic Church wants to do business in the US, it needs to bide by US law. Period. That being said, if a worker, who has the right to be provided contraceptive coverage chooses not to want this coverage, they should be able to not take that portion of the coverage.

SHerm, would have us all return to a time when the insurance companies could drop you from coverage when you got sick, something "Obamacare" eliminated.

Lester--are you somewhere in a cave? Not everyone is covered for contraceptives and only the rich can pay their own way for contraceptives. If contraceptives are not covered by insurance, then the women are required to pay full price and that can cost them from $600 to $1,200 per year. Most women cannot afford that.
And...birth control pills are NOT just for contraceptives either--many women take them for medical reasons.
It is like saying to men "As a woman, I don't need PSA tests therefore why should they be covered or I don't take Viagra so why should they be covered?"

I have a suggestion--why don't we women gang together & not one woman would have sex with her husband until he is willing to say contraceptives should be covered. How soon would it take to get men to back down from their "holier than thou" attitude about contraceptiver. Thank heavens for all the men who are supporting the women's right to choose and be covered under health insurance--they are indeed saints!!!!!!!!

Remember when the democrats of Nevada said we were in a budget short fall that included not only the real costs of operations but the proposed RAISES they wanted for departments.
Reminds me Obama's budget. Since he didn't ask for a raise of 1 trillion dollars, his budget saves us a 1 trillion dollars? How is that savings? Only democrats think with such logic.

All democrats care about is killing babies. I guess they can disquise it all they want by the word "choice" but, in what other way can we legally butcher a life? I hope God or Karma gets back

Abortion can be legal for medical well being of the mother, rape, and incest only, not out of convienance. People have a choice where to go for medical advice if you don't like the fact a catholic medical place doesn't like contraceptives then go somewhere else. Stop forcing your ideas on others like little democrat nazis.

Two quick points, because of this issue Mitt Romney has now been forced to adopt the Rick Santorum position that 'birth control is a sin and should not be available to women.'

So Mitt Romney is now against birth control. Let's see how the women of America feel about that.

Second point, 'ObamaCare.' How many of you here remember 'HillaryCare,' anyone? See, this is what Republicans do, they try to scare the hell out of people by pretending Hillary Clinton or President Obama are going to take-over your health care choices.

Does anybody see the irony in that the very same people who are trying to prevent women from receiving birth control now claim the OTHER GUYS are trying to take over your health care choices?

'ObamaCare,' you all want to know why first President Bill Clinton first tried and then President Barack Obama succeeded, sort of, but do you think these Democratic Presidents made health insurance reform such a priority just for the hell of it? Because they really are Socialists bent on destroying our way of life? Really?

Here is why they did it, because the United States pays as much as 3 times more per person for health care than those damn French do, and the part that really pisses me off is those damn French live longer!!

But that is why these Democratic presidents, Clinton and Obama, made health insurance reform such a priority.
Written by: Yeager on Monday, Feb. 13, 2012 at 8:37 PM -- Report abuse
I usually lose a post or two on topics like this one but I'm going to keep saying this until I see it post, the United States pays up to 3 times as much, per person, for health care than every other country in the world that we would normally compare ourselves with. You all know the countries, I don't have to list them but the bottom is pretty simple, most countries in Europe pay one helluvu lot less for health care and THEY LIVE LONGER.

What are they doing right and we are doing wrong?

I will admit to not totally understanding why Republicans don't see this too? I mean, I'm a liberal Democrat but I don't believe Republicans want Americans to pay 3 times as much as the French do for health care and then live shorter lives. I don't quite understand that part of the equation.

Yeager, you need to post your drivel 3 more times for Davie-boy Plouffe to meet his quota.

Well, what a fine bunch of children you liberal posters are!

Don't you touch our contraceptives! ( don't want to touch it. I don't think it's my responsibility to pay for it!)

How is a woman suppose to afford $600 to $1200 A YEAR? (are you serious? Maybe they could cut out the Starbucks run, eh?)

And misdirect much, Mike Duffy? Should we ban any federal money from going to Syracuse or Penn State, too? But that is a totally different topic, isn't it?

And if the Church don't like what the State wants, too bad!(Who died and left you Catholics God, anyway?)

Wanna know why socialism doesn't work? Cause people get addicted to free stuff, get entitled (spoiled), and love it when someone else pays (but mostly they don't even think about the cost or someone else paying).

Kinda like children. And this country contains the most spoiled, privileged people that have ever graced this Earth. Medical costs 3 times everyone else? Maybe because our medical process would be considered miraculous just 40 years ago (when I was a young man), and still God-like compared to 75% of the world, right now.

Need a gallon of milk? A gourmet meal? A new car? A 4G cell phone with complete internet access (which is like having a library in your pocket)? Central A/C? And so on, and so on and so on.

Our POVERTY LEVEL would put people in the top ten% of their respective villages, in well over half the world TODAY. And yet, we want more. For free. Cause why should we pay for it? Look at all those rich fat cats that have all that money!

Like Madonna or Michael Moore. Oops, not them. Look at Mittens and Rupert Murdock and evil Republican millionaires! Get the money from them!

Grow up, already!

I gotta congratulate the Democratic strategist that came up with this plsn.

The Catholic church can't turn out a vote. Even their own followers will not vote for what the pedarasts tell them to.

Better yet, the vast majority of women support both freedom of choice. They just don't admit it to the patriarchs that try to enslave them.

This issue is a beautiful reversal of the Rove strategy to scare people into voting for the GOP incumbents when rove manipulated the terrorist threat levels to scare the morons in this country to keep putting Cheney in control.

This little gem of a tactic is going to wee wee up all the authoritarian goof balls to a point that the GOP will suffer the most catastrophic losses this generation.

So by all means... keep talking about forcing women to have babies they don't want and denying access to birth control.

Your futile attempts to drag the other 80% of America back to the dark ages will be the the action that finally crushes the GOP for the next several decades.

But, when the Catholic church and their religious views have a first amendment issue with Obamacare, democrats spew elitist "do what we say" soup nazi talk. "No waiver for you!"

Will democrats just admit, they only agree with constitution when it fits their mood?

there is no "obamacare waiver" for McDonalds. None.
And the Catholic church is doesn't have to provide insurance for its employees that includes contraceptives.
So your rhetorical question is doubly misleading.

Associated Press:
"Mitt Romney faulted President Barack Obama's original push to require church-affiliated employers to pay for birth control as an "assault on religion," but as Massachusetts governor, Romney was largely silent about a state law that required virtually the same contraceptive coverage. The Massachusetts law, which essentially mirrored Obama's proposal, was signed by Romney's predecessor in 2002, the year before he took office. Romney did not seek its repeal. "

The Wall Street Journal: Romney And Birth Control: A Shift
"Mitt Romney has said the Obama administration is intruding on religious freedom by moving to require religious–affiliated employers to cover contraception services in their health insurance plans. When confronted with a similar law as governor of Massachusetts, Mr. Romney didn't raise objections on religious or moral grounds, say people who worked in his administration or in health care interest groups there. Rather, he viewed the contraception requirement more in economic terms, as only one of many costly "mandates'' that some believed were driving up the price of insurance and suppressing competition, according to these people."

I find particularly poignant this quote from the President of the Catholic Life League of Massachusetts:
“He is very consistent at working both sides of the street on the same issue at the same time. His record on this issue has been one of very cynical and tactical manipulation.’’
Written by: petenyc on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012 at 8:28 PM -- Report abuse
The "waivers from Obamacare" were not waivers from Obamacare at all. Rather, they allowed a bunch of mostly fast food companies to delay for about 18 months the implemention of a requirement that ceertain "mini-med" policies raise their maximum coverage ceilings. That temporary measure was designed to avoid burdening certain types of businesses and to avoid gaps in coverage.
Delaying for 18 months implementation of specific rule applicable to a specific type of coverage is not as "waiver from Obamacare."
And, as I said, churches do not have to provide insurance to their employees that includes contraceptives.

So we are really going to have a political debate about whether or not birth control should be available to ALL WOMEN? Really? The Republican Party is going to take the Rick Santorum position that birth control is damaging the family and is a sin?

It is really that simple; Should all women have access to FREE BIRTH CONTROL, or will President Rick Santorum try to deny women, and men, that option?

And yes, I said FREE, because most insurance companies will pay the full amount for birth control because they know it is one helluvu lot cheaper to pay for birth control than to pay for all of the repurcussions of people not using birth control.

This is not a 'religious freedom' argument fellow citizens, this is a poltical argument about whether or not people have the right to obtain free birth control, the key word here being "free." No co-pay's or deductibles, free. And it turns out birth control ain't cheap!!
Written by: Yeager on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012 at 10:10 PM -- Report abuse
Athos, you have to realize some day that providing things "free" to Americans can be a very good thing.

For example, when Aetna, or United Health, or any one of the giant insurance companies decide that paying 100 percent of the cost of birth control is cheaper and smarter than not doing so, thus making it "free" to the people being insured, this is a good thing for the insurance companies and for the people they insure. They all save money, how can that not be a good thing?

Jerry, have you not heard of Quantitative Easing? Do you have any idea how much money the Fed has flooded into the system to prop up EVERYTHING? Do you think that has NOTHING to do with the "dead cat bounce" of our economy improving?

Actually, NO ONE knows how much money Bernanke has flooded into the system, cause NO ONE is auditing the Fed. But the National debt is climbing higher exponentially and when interest rates go up, so does the debt service payment.

All Ø cares about is getting 4 more years to "fundamentally transform" this country into a socialist paradise. Except there IS NO SUCH THING as a socialist paradise.

You do understand that, don't you, Jerry? If I borrowed $1,000,000, I could quit my job, buy a fancy car, throw outlandish parties and have a dramatic improvement on my lifestyle, right?
