Shame on 'Abortion Harry'

Sen. Harry Reid tweeted this today:

"Whether women choose to use #contraception should be their decision, not the decision of their employers or politicians in Washington."

To which the people say: "What the ...?"

Choice, of course, is not even close to the issue at hand. Sen. Reid yesterday said he absolutely, 100% supported the president's government mandate forcing all businesses -- even religious organizations -- to provide free contraception and abortion pills as part of their health insurance.

The government has no right to do that. It clearly violates the First Amendment to the Constitution. Must a bishop offer free "morning after" pills to his staff, even though he considers it a sin? In Sen. Reid's own religion (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) anyone who helps another have an abortion is excommunicable. There is no weasel room in that principle, even for U.S. Senators.

The Catholic church has another approach. Authorities there say that anyone who helps facilitate an abortion has excommunicated him- or herself. Yet yesterday Sen. Reid and President Obama said everyone -- even religious organizations with conscientious objections to the government rule -- must make abortion and contraception pills available for free.

Today religious leaders said they would go to jail before violating their religious principles. The U.S. Catholic church read letters of admonition from the pulpit on Sunday, some of them in Spanish to the church's sizable Hispanic constituency. Their target was precisely leaders like President Obama and Sen. Reid.

Yet in today's statement, Reid makes it sound like he's somehow outside those oppressive "politicians in Washington" mandating abortion and contraception.

He most certainly is not. In fact he is such a primary culprit of this outrageous overstep of government authority he ought to be called "Abortion Harry".

P.S. -- While I don't agree with Sen. Reid about much politically anymore these days, I do know him to be a thoughtful man, even when he's totally pissed at me. In that regard, I hope he thinks hard about the position he's carved out for himself on this issue, and reverses himself with strength and conviction. He could be such a powerful force for good and a voice of reason if he did.

Sherm, I really want to congratulate you. Just when I think that you are merely silly, you remind us that you are indeed totally evil.

why should some church be able to tell me what healthcare the country can have....if its medicine it should be covered.....most women use BC and nothing any church says is going to change that....the insurance DOES NOT cover abortion...the morning after pill KEEPS you from getting pregnate and cuts down on the number of abortions needed as does BC...the easier access to these the fewer abortions there will be..whether your pro choice or not that is a good thing.

Womens choice to use contraception is their decision, not the decision of employers, politicians, pastors, disc jockys, media columnists or old men.

1. the bogus "first amendement" argument was disposed of by Justice Scalia in "Employment Division v. Smith," when he held that religious believers and institutions are not entitled to an exemption from generally applicable laws. To do otherwise, he said, "would be to make the professed doctrines of religious belief superior to the law of the land, and in effect to permit every citizen to become a law unto himself.”

By the way - I find it remarkable that Sherman Frederick wants to make the morning after pill, the IUD and other contragestives a criminal offense.

Sherman Frederick and his fellow Republicans) would like to give your employer the right to decide whether your insurance will cover your contraceptives and contragestives.

Good thing Mitt Romney signed executive orders keeping employers from doing what Mr. Frederick wants them to be able to do! Thanks, Mitt!

Face it, folks. Liberals want to pretend they can live like "God is Dead" but nothing scares them more than being wrong about the most important aspect of life.

He's real. There are absolutes. And you fellas are gonna be in a whole lot of trouble when the Grim Reaper comes a knocking.

Sherm, with Harry THE CROOK'S record, why hasn't he already been ex-communicated? Or aren't the Mormons really that serious?

Oh, boo hoo. The Republicans keep understating President Obama and women, and they keep outfoxing them. Now that the Republicans can't segregate women on women's health; their little minions here on Sherman's Whimper Blog revert to their usual crying, lying and name-calling.

I would encourage you wingers to keep yelling about contraceptives, Planned Parenthood, etc.

Please keep it up -- right through to the election.

Yeah, PeteNYC is an expert on elections.

Let's see.....kool-aid head pro-choice 110%..vote for Obama.

Let's eee ....Conservative pro-life 110% ..vote for Republican.

Most independents will vote based on economy.

Some Catholic or other religious Dems or Indep who would have voted for Obama will either not vote or vote Republican because Obama clearly doesn't care about Right of Religious Liberty.

Yeah....let's listen to PeteNYC.

Let's help the Democrats keep this whole Planned Parenthood getting hundreds of millions and they also perform hundreds of thousand of abortions.

Let's help the Democrats and keep rememind people that ObamaCrap is all about Big Government taking over our lives and trappling on our freedoms.

Yeah let's follow Petes advice and help the Democrats.

Question for the abortion butchers commenting on the article: When does life begin?
Written by: Minden63 on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012 at 6:54 AM -- Report abuse
to "minden63" - I would say that life begins with adhesion of the trophoblast into the endometrium. I would say that life that should be recognized as "human" begins with quickening.

Since when does the Catholic Church run America? Keep in mind Sherm your friends the Catholics are: against the death penalty, against cutbacks to programs helping the poor, against "anti-immigrant laws" like 187, and 1070, and against the Iraq War.

So the Cafeteria Catholics pick the issues that involve sex to harp on. No wonder Obama is so much ahead in the polls over Republicans that want to ban birth control.

BTW, Nevada voted on abortion in 1994 and 60% were for it.

Too bad Sturdirants folks hadn't practiced abortion. Or maybe they did and it wasn't entirely successful.

to "john.lewis": your remark (and "minden63's" characterization of people who disagree with his position on contraception as "butchers") is a perfect encapsulation of the approach of today's conservatives to debate in a democracy.

Athos, How could I be afraid of any mythology? Question: What is the natural rate of abortion in women who become pregnant? Under 50% or over 50%?

Hi nancy, Not that the drooling mouth breathers here get your question but, by definition, birth control means less abortions.

Thank You Obama for reminding us of the following:

1) Democrats are Big Government
2) Big Government wants to shove things people throats
3) ObamaCrap is Big Government
4) Democrats want to trapple on the rights of the citizens especially Religious Freedom
5) Democrats are anti-religion

Thank You

Please continue to remind of us these things right up to the election.

As a Nevada resident over the last 42 years I can attest that small government and low taxes lead to poverty and, as so well demonstrated by prvt Rock, stupidity from poor educational opportunities.

The christian brotherhood is as dangerous as the muslim brotherhood....they are the same. Yet christians are critical of them. Then why do they dictate as do the the muslim brotherhood.....religion has no right to say what gov can and can't do.....and they have no right to tell other people what they can and can't do. Preach to your own members and leave the rest of us alone.

Catholic Church:

Against death penalty
Against Iraq War
Against "anti-immagrant laws" like 187 and 1070
Against cutbacks in programs for the poor

Are you ready to adopt their views on those issues Sherm?

Sherm, I am always honored when a sociopathic liar who defiles the name of Jesus is critical of me. But, speaking of Harry, I will always be grateful to him not only for winning, but in the process causing your firing as publisher. You won't admit that, of course, but you are about as acquainted with truth as you are with black people.

Let's breakdown McShafer statement: "As a Nevada resident over the last 42 years I can attest that small government and low taxes lead to poverty and, as so well demonstrated by prvt Rock, stupidity from poor educational opportunities. "

As for "stupidity from poor educational opportunities" this is directly conflict with almost all stats like this one from the US Census which says that Nevada is ranked 28th in household income and many of us know that there are tons of non-college blue collar workers on the strip that earn in excess of $100k a year and also County fire-fighters too who only have to GED earn over $150k a year in cash and benefits.

"stupidity from poor educational opportunities"

This might be true. I earned my degrees from other institutions from other states.

However, McShafer cleary earned his here so he is stupid so he is probably correct on this statement.

Good for you for being correct on part of your statement. You earned a gold star.
