The Rory Story: First in a never-ending series of in-kind Sun political contributions

Reporters may choose to pretend this isn't true, but it's plain that the decision already has been made over at the Las Vegas Sun to do everything possible, journalism be damned, to elect Rory Reid next governor of Nevada. He is the son of U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, who in the three-plus decades of elected public service to Nevada has never met with a discouraging word from the Las Vegas Sun. That never-ending series of in-kind political contributions now carries on to the son.

Let me be absolutely plain, here. This is not to say that Rory Reid is a bad guy or wouldn't make a good governor. But that's a decision better left for later and in the crucible of a competitive race. It certainly is not a decision that should dictate news coverage now or later.

But it is hard not to see the theology of Reid predestiny in the pages of the Sun. Consider the story today in which a rare "three-fer" is achieved.

Rory is touted for governor.

Check.

Rory's chief Democratic rival, Barbara Buckley, is whacked.

Check.

Republican Gov. Jim Gibbons gets a sharp elbow to the temple.

Double-check.

The only surprise in the story comes in the very last graph (an editing "error"?) in which this criticism of Reid finds ink:

"(Dan) Burns (spokesman for Gov. Gibbons) then previewed a line of attack that Reid will surely face — management of the troubled county hospital, University Medical Center: “Who is in charge of the county hospital? If the chair of Clark County Commission wants to criticize what is happening in the Legislature, maybe he ought to look in his own back yard first,” he said."

You'd think a good reporter interested in writing about the governor's race this far out might naturally dig into that question and others.

Don't hold your breath.

Instead, stand by for a big Sun puff piece on how UMC has finally turned around to now become a great medical institution under the caring and watchful guidance of the County Commission.

Bet me.

Hey Sherm-
You've got a lotta noive!
The RJ news pages are filled with hit pieces against your enemies, and puff pieces for your friends.
You are NPRI's PR machine!
And your vitriol against Senator Reid spews from every news page!
At least the Sun makes for intelligent and consistent reading!

I blame Rupert Murdoch. His transformation of every media outlet he acquires, into a right wing propaganda machine has rather quickly reduced ALL media to yellow dog journalism, and even worse, flat out political bias.

There seem to be no more 'independent' news sources, except maybe the AP. All the other conventional news sources have devolved into pure political propaganda for both parties that editorialize instead of report.

I also blame Ted Turner. He should have never sold CNN and HNN to Time-Warner.

Perhaps the Sun's aim is to counter the consitant drivel that the RJ puts out in the full court press to oust Harry Reid.

Sherm, you might now have to spend time healing over the Ensgin issues (or pending issues) or you could see Reid re-elected and Ensign ousted !!

Put a reporter on the Ensign fire extinguisher and have him ready to douse the flames at every turn........but be carefull as you don't want to expose the GOP talking points about FAMILY VALUES, SANCTITY of MARRIAGE & the RELIGIOUS RIGHTS TEN COMMANDMENTS (Ensign just flushed a few commandments down the toilet).

As for Reid, just use the GOP line of thinking and take a page from the McCain-Palin campaign by starting to paint Reid as a "Socialist", "Terrorist" or "Muslim"....and try to scare voters to vote against Reid!!

Sherm, I noticed the same thing about the way Greenspun has made its decision. It would be nice if the Sun would stick to reporting instead of using news stories to forward Greenspun's agenda.

Not to defend Reid, but their is unbelievable irony in Dan Burns' jab at Reid regarding UMC. The major reasons that UMC operates in the red are the repeated cuts in Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement, in addition to the elimination of the indigent accident fund, all of which are controlled by the state's chief executive and Burns' boss, Gov. Gibbons. The Governor's decisions are the single biggest contributing factor that Reid has trouble with UMC.

Has the Luv Gov been deliberately cutting UMC funding to use UMC as an issue against Reid? I think the answer is in Burns' response.
