Once again establishing my firm reportorial grasp of the obvious, let me tell Nevadans to brace themselves for a very public, very ugly divorce in the governor's mansion. Gov. Jim Gibbons has left the official residence that the people provide for their governor ... and is living in Reno. Dawn, meanwhile, remains in the governor's mansion, refusing to gracefully exit citing her pressing duties as first lady.
Now comes the hot "news": Dawn's divorce attorney has accused the governor of having a long-standing affair with the estranged wife of a doctor in Reno. The governor says it ain't true, no how, no where. However there have been reports the two have been seen in public together. And there are whispers that there may be more than one, well, filly in the barn.
I have seen the governor in public with women who are not his wife. I have pictures of three of them. Who are they? Inquiring minds want to know.

Now, one for you. As publisher, how would you handle a columnist referring to Obama's looks in disparaging terms?
Yes, it is a loaded question. It occurred in reading Ms. Neff's remarks about McCain's "elastic jowl."
I'm not a journalist, but I am an educated man. I am quite sure I could have gleaned Ms. Neff's thesis sans her schoolyard slur. In fact, her thesis on a second read through made some factual sense. The first read prevents me from attributing to her anything but demagoguery.
I don't know her bona fides as a journalist and perhaps those qualifications differ for an opinion columnist.
Here's my point: Sherm, there are millions of us out here in the middle. And we are smart enough that we cannot be swayed by personal attack. So, why cannot reporting, and opinion writing, be welded to facts or factual commentary without personal invectives?
Mike
The short answer is that with an opinion colmnist such as Erin Neff there must be wide allowance for interesting writing. While mentioning the physical attributes of someone can be dangerous, I thought this was a reasonable turn of phrase.
And, I thought the content of the column raised reasonable questions.

Well, that is (I guess) what makes you a publisher, and me a reader. But, I caution you, the majority of use are sick and tired of such "interesting writing" and "reasonable [turns] of phrase." Any "reasonable questions" a writer intends to raise depend upon the willing attention of the reader for any degree of absorption. Rude slurs, which color such writing in a bile-tinged hue, do nothing to invite further reading, excepting those who are already in league with such rude demagoguery and jaded opinions.
It's just the way it is.
Thanks for your time,
Mike
Fair enough.
Sherm
...and while I'm writing here, Sherm, please. Can you stop publishing pictures of Elizabeth Halverson? We all know what she looks like at this point and some things just shouldn't be viewed during breakfast.
I'm just sayin'...
