Harry Reid gets it right

Call it survival politics if you like. For me, I'm just stunned Harry Reid said something I can fully endorse. It's been a long time.

Yes, those who seek to build a mosque at Ground Zero have a right in America (an ironclad right Jews and Christians do not have in Muslim run states, BTW) to build near Ground Zero in New York City. The question is should they.

And the answer for me, as regular blog readers know, is hell no. It's just not right. It's not sensitive. And when this morning, terrorist organization Hamas backed the mosque (and you can bet also kicked in funds) that should have iced it for all Americans.

All Americans, that is, but the left wing of the Democrat Party and President Barack Obama.

So it is good to see Harry Reid break from the wing-nuts in his own party. When Harry Reid splits with Barack Obama it's rare as rain in the Mohave. May it continue.

Reid also supported Nevada's ban on gay marriage.

I agree with that.

He has never regretted it either like he does about his stand on babies being given citizenship whose mothers are illegals.

As sure as the sun will rise tomorrow...wait, I'm not so sure now!

So do you consider this another dumb move by the Angle camp? Surely they were counting on Reid to say he supported the mosque...are Angle and her handlers left slack-jawed, or will they put out a commercial saying..

"Harry Reid wants to abolish religious freedom!"

Don't mince words. Your lawfully elected Sen Reid supports the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America, which states...

"All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."

This was upheld in "US v Ark, 1898", "Hernandez v TX, 1954" and several other Supreme Court rulings.

Those are the facts.

It's amazing that Harry now comes out in the opposition to the Mosque at Ground Zero, I want to know where he was when the Muslim's were exempted from the Healthcare Bill?

Freedom of Speech gives us that right; decency, restricts it's use. Freedom of Religion gives the Muslim's the right to build their Mosque. -WHEN America changes it's values with knee jerk reactions such as the Patriot Act and preventing Mosque's from being built the terrorist's really do win. That's WHY the torture allowed and used under Bush was such a foolish mistake; it showed us to be the cruel oppressor that the Islamic terrorist claim us to be; and We proved their point. They way for America to prevail is by remaining true to our values and beliefs. There are LOTS of things our system allows that we don't like; I don't like teapartier's carrying signs of Obama dressed in a Nazi uniform, and calling the President a Marxist. But I'll defend your right to do that. Should we not let the Catholics build any more churches? They've been responsible for some egregious acts of late. How bout Synagogues? The Israelis do some bad things too. What about the Southern Baptist's who threw bombs into occupied churches in the south in the 60's? You can see the "slippery slop". In America either we hold the torch high OR we don't.
We won't defeat Islamic terrorism with bombs and bullets- we WILL defeat it American Hearts and American Values and The American governmental system of equal justice for all- guaranteed by the Constitution.

Hey Sherm-After the 1st 3 years of Lies by Bush about going to was in Iraq-wasn't decided that we were there to bring freedom to the Iraqi's? 4400+ of our kids died there Sherman to bring freedom to the Muslims. I guess freedom for you depends on geography?

It's a Victory Mosque, people. Harry of Reid had to get permission from his master, Dr. Utopia, OR come tomorrow, he'll put out a retraction, or some fudge for the faithful to chew on.

Since all these primitive mythologies are the same, including christianity, I don't care where their buildings are put, just so long as they don't advocate harm to us or our environment. It is a shame that people waste the only time they have alive in rituals that are, at best, useless.

Agreed, it is all about being in good taste. I would not be repulsed about a mosque being built next door to me, but on the site of the towers it just turns my stomach.

This past week a simmering controversy over the construction of an Islamic community center two blocks from the World Trade Center reached a boiling point across the country.

Republican politicians leading the charge against the center have dubbed it "Ground Zero Mosque," creating the misconception that the hallowed ground of the Twin Towers is being built over and stoking dangerous anti-Muslim fears.

The reality is much more benign: The center, conceived by a Muslim leader known for his interfaith work with the Bush Administration after 9/11 and founded with the mission of spreading religious understanding and tolerance, will provide a swimming pool, auditorium, restaurants, and other spaces open to the community, and is to be built on the site of a former Burlington Coat Factory.

Those fighting against the center have cloaked themselves in the banner of patriotism. But there is nothing patriotic about blocking the right to religious freedom. As New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg has said, "The ability to practice your religion was one of the real reasons America was founded."

Mayor Bloomberg, who grew up surrounded by anti-Semitism and knows what it feels like to be a target of religious discrimination, reports that all the families of 9/11 victims he has spoken with have been supportive of the building. Referring to the victims, Bloomberg says, "We do not honor their lives by denying the very Constitutional rights they died protecting. We honor their lives by defending those rights - and the freedoms that the terrorists attacked."

I'm all for freedom of religion. I have no problem with Moslem's building mosques. And, had 9/11 not happened, I'd have no problem with them building one at the location in question.

9/11 did, however, happen. And, building a mosque so near ground zero is, at best, insensitive to the survivors and the relatives of those who died that day. At worst, it appears like triumphalism on the part of Islam.

Best case scenario, those behind this project agree to move the mosque a few miles. Worst case, it goes up, quickly comes back down, and causes more problems between our two cultures.

I disagree with Senator Reid that it matters where the location of this community center is located. Unlike the right wingers here, lock-step with my candidates of choice is not required. I also disagree with Mr. Frederick, who still can't get it right, calling it a mosque, and saying it is at ground zero. It is neither.

I notice you only comment on Senator Reid's comments on various subjects. Why have you not discussed your feeling on friend of the RJ Sharon Angle's positions? Do you, like Angle, want to lead an armed takeover of the government? Do you feel we should abolish social security, the department of education, and the food and drug administration? Do you think Nevadans are spoiled? Are you aware that the Angle campaign has openly declared the RJ editorial staff "a friend"? These are highly relevant to us in NV, as are Harry Reid's comments, yet you only comment on one side, all while being the publisher of a pretend NV newspaper. Sharon Angle's comments have been national news during this campaign, yet remain uncovered in the publishers blog which is almost exclusively politics (as well as being almost exclusively nonsense). Is this because Sharon Angle considers the RJ a "friend", or because you have nothing good to say about the crack pot your Tea Party wants to elect to the Senate?

The fact the Sherm Frederick has a mutual love fest with Sharron (sic) Angle comes as no surprise. The fact they the publisher slanders Senator Reid on a daily basis come as no surprise.

What is a surprise is the LVRJ represents itself as a news organization without an agenda. The LVRJ is about as much of a news organization as Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News. Funny thing, in a Canadian lawsuit Fox News states they are an entertainment organization NOT a news organization.

Given the partisan, slandering nature of the Republican Journal, it is a joke to present the newspaper as an objective, unbiased news agency.

The LVRJ needs a beacon …and I’m here to help… ;-)

According to The Elements of Journalism, a book by Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel, there are nine elements of journalism. In order for a journalist to fulfill their duty of providing the people with the information, they need to be free and self-governing. They must follow these guidelines:
1. Journalism's first obligation is to the truth.
2. Its first loyalty is to the citizens.
3. Its essence is discipline of verification.
4. ITS PRACTIONERS MUST MAINTAIN AN INDEPENDENCE FROM THOSE THEY COVER (tell that to Senator Reid).
5. It must serve as an independent monitor of power.
6. It must provide a forum for public criticism and compromise.
7. It must strive to make the significant interesting, and relevant.
8. It must keep the news comprehensive and proportional.
9. Its practitioners must be allowed to exercise their personal conscience.
10. It’s the rights and responsibilities of citizens.

I will make it very simple:
As a ex-ny'er and a cousin of one of the fireman who was killed and I knew three others who were killed.
1) they do have a right to build
2)BUT just as Pope John Paul II stopped the building of a nunnery @ Auschwitz - the religion of peace (Islam) should be sensitive to their fellow Americans and build it somewhere else - a few miles uptown.
Call it an olive branch offering to the community so other Americans can act in kind.

The proposed mosque is not at ground zero. It is two blocks away. How is that insensitive? Where is all the conservative outrage at the government trying to meddle in this issue? Oh yeah, because a majority of the conservative right is only for religious and other freedoms as long as those freedoms are for Christians.

Usually Jerry is sharper on stuff. A little chronology is needed. Angle made the first statement of the two by attacking Obama for his insensitivity.

The left wing bloggers went ballistic. They attacked Angle and jumped on Reid to respond. Remembering how many voters are Mormon, he made the best statement he could to not lose members of that important voting block.

We right wingers are just enjoying how manipulative Reid is being in trying to save his taxpayer paid power trip. Anybody who doesn't believe his tricks with the healthcare bill like the "Louisiana Purchase" or the "Cornhusker Kickback" get to witness the slithering up close and personal.

Just another example that Reid is a denizen of the swamp who should be removed with the "draining".

They are assuming that Harry Reids connections to a substrata of money, mob and influence goes back fifty years, Reids former campaign manager paints picture of politician looking for money on the side.Claim Reid took campaign donations from pimp Joe Conforte of the Mustang Ranch brothel,mob interest in sweetheart treatment of land developers, G-Sting scandal, fat cat campaign contributors and much, much, more taint the record of Harry Reid, and he is bad mouthing Sharron Angle, lets RETIRE REID, and the people around him, we cannot afford to give them anymore taxes, our insurance deducted each month from our paycheck is one thousand dollars, when the Obamacare shifts in we will pay two thousand, they take five hundred from our check for taxes now and one thousand if the bush tax cut does not stay, we cannot afford to work, we will have to get on government aid, we cannot afford to work anymore.

Mark.Gallo, I did a search on Google Maps and there are over 20 churches within 0.1 miles of Ground Zero. Given that, how can anyone say that a Mosque being built two blocks away is wrong. Should we pick and chose when to ignore the Constitution?

When it involves a victory mosque from those that wish to have us 'submit' to their religion, it is, in no way, against our constitution.

And all those that think otherwise, are blind to our need for self preservation.
