Counterpunch: Cherchio stings union front group

For months, North Las Vegas City Councilman Richard Cherchio has taken heat from the NLV firefighters union after he dared to criticize public employee contracts.

Now that Cherchio is up for election, he’s being thumped by something called Citizens for Responsible Leadership and Ethics, which is criticizing the councilman for backing a costly new City Hall and Water Reclamation facility.

Trouble is, Cherchio responds, those projects were approved before he became a member of the council.

And that supposed citizen’s group is headed by veteran firefighters Battalion Chief Scott Gorgon and Capt. Jeffrey Buchanan.

Not only that, Cherchio jabs in his latest press missive, both men scored heavy in the overtime department. Like other local governments, North Las Vegas is slashing its budget and calling for fiscal austerity.

Cherchio: “When you look at what these guys are making in overtime pay, close to $50,000 in 2009 alone, it’s no wonder these guys are going after Council members who have asked for salary concessions from employee groups to balance the budget.

“I have been one of the driving forces behind balancing the City’s budget, cutting nearly 150 million from the budget since coming on the Council in 2009. This political stunt hatched by a couple of overtime abusers who don’t have their facts straight is an insult to every hard working North Las Vegan who’s working hard to pay their bills and put food on the table.”

Sounds like those firefighters have a real fighter on their hands.

John-
Why don't you be a good reporter, and write for both sides of this issue? Mr. Cherchio went behind the council and everyone's back, and was making deals with the private ambulance service to get rid of firefighters? Where's that story John? Or are you too busy throwin back grandpa's cough medicine and getting behind the wheel. Stooge.

First up, for all those firefighters out there that play it straight in the pay area and who work hard, I salute you. Second, for those that abuse the overtime and sick time, and who take pot shots when their bloated paychecks have to take a hit because the city is in legitimate financial trouble, I say watch out. Those abusers need to sitdown, shutup and roll with reasonable concessions asked for by the city so that they don't have to lay off legitmate hardworking NLVegans. To Cherchio I say be reasonable and prudent about what you cut or the concessions asked for, because a budget should be solely balanced on the backs of the employees. Everyone and everything needs to come to the table and seriously contemplate what they can offer to make things work.

Oops, fingers were flying too fast earlier, I meant to say, "a budget should NOT, ABSOLUTELY NOT be solely balanced on the backs of the employees.

Yes John please write about the poor firefighters. Tell us how many NLV firefighters live in NLV, Utah and Wyoming. Tell us how many of these poor fighters live, shop and pay taxes in NLV. Please tell us what % of the cities budget is wages. Please go to TransparentNavada and see how terribly underpaid these firefighters are and why they could not afford to make concessions.
