A political action committee supporting the presidential run of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has taken $10 million in donations from Las Vegas Sands Corp. Chairman Sheldon Adelson and his wife.
But that doesn’t mean the candidate is fully supportive of gaming.
According to the Miami Herald’s political blog, Gingrich’s position on gaming isn’t really clear.
"Well, let me say up front, at the risk of offending some of my friends who've been very helpful," Gingrich said, according to the Herald. "I worry about the degree to which the poor are the most likely to end up spending a large percentage of their income gambling in the false hope that they can mathematically beat the system."
Gingrich, however, never said whether he supported or opposed casino gaming.
Gaming is a hot issue in Florida. The legislature is considering whether to expand casino-style gaming in the state. Adelson’s company, Las Vegas Sands, is supportive of casino expansion, along with many other companies including MGM Resorts International, Wynn Resorts Ltd. and Malaysia-based Genting.
