Rip that carpet up off of the floor, pack up your oil stove and head out the door ...

The Nevada News Bureau reported Wednesday, "Nevada Senate Minority Leader Bill Raggio said today layoffs of state employees should be a 'last resort' as Gov. Jim Gibbons and lawmakers seek ways to balance the Nevada budget." Sen. Raggio, R-Reno, made his comments in an interview on the Nevada NewsMakers" program.

And we still wonder why the Republican Party does such a lame-ass job drawing voters to a supposedly "smaller government" alternative in the Silver State? Who does the doddering Sen. Raggio believe constitute his main constituency -- the state employee unions?

A lawmaker with even minimal "smaller government" instincts -- a Libertarian, say -- would have vowed, "Tax hikes must be a last resort" as Nevada seeks to pare back its governmental spending to something a tad more affordable. Laying off state employees -- and youth-propaganda-camp administrators subsidized with state taxpayer funds -- should rank about second.

What option should top the list? Closing down entirely any state office or department created since 1959, of course -- starting with the administrators who oversee the pointless "smog checking" of cars that already accomplish this goal with internal computers. That way, they won't be able to ever hire them back.

C'mon, Vin, don't you know that a government program can never be ended. After all, we're still paying for temporary, Depression-era programs. How can we ever have the entire populace dependent on government if we go around closing various agencies?

Man, you just don't understand how government works...

This reminds me of the City of Las Vegas survey that asks citizens if they want tax hikes or not. If not, you have to choose what programs you would like eliminated. Of course, useless bureaucratic departments are not listed; instead, it lists Fire, Police, Parks and Education. I wrote-in the business licensing department and buildings department. But that's hardly a drop in the bucket. How about eliminating the new city center?

After reading recently that the Clark County School Board is still spending millions on consultants, I would suggest that instead of reducing staff, we should hire one sober and sane person with a red pencil. I bet we could save millions in worthless programs

Raggio is a symptom of the cancer that infects both major political parties. The man has never been right about anything. And he gets more wrong every day. In his case, term limits should have been two days, not twelve years.

We have a Republican minority leader who is a closet democrat. A governor who wants to force through by regulation a Real ID act that could not pass the smell test for the legislature.

RINO has become more a self-fulfilling prophesy than an indictment.

Patrick, how about pointing you to the SEC, TVA, and the FDIC? Any of those work for depression era boondoggles we are still paying for?

You and Raggio are both correct, because closing programs does not lead to layoffs, it leads to permanent job loss.

The FIRST programs to be cut are any that were put in place by the 2005 legislature.

Recall that, expecting an $800 million budget shortfall, the 2003 legislature passed new taxes that resulted in a $800 million surplus. Governor Guinn was so embarrassed that he actually gave us half of it back.

So the 2005 legislature repealed all of the unnecessary new taxes, right? Not a chance; they created new programs to encumber every last cent of it. That's where the hatchet should start.
