Greenspun Media Group lays off up to 10 percent of staff

Affected workers were employed as writers, editors for specialty and lifestyle publications

A major local publisher of niche newspapers and magazines laid off as much as 10 percent of its staff this week, industry sources said Friday.

Greenspun Media Group, a sister company of the Las Vegas Sun newspaper, let more than 20 of its employees go, according to observers in the local communications sector.

  • Greenspun Media executives refused to comment on the staff reductions, but one local communications executive said the company was calling the staffing move a restructuring. Greenspun Media's profile on professional networking site LinkedIn.com says the company has between 201 and 500 employees.

Laid-off workers include the editor of H&D, a glossy home and design magazine published six times a year, and a reporter for the special sections division at the weekly In Business Las Vegas.

Also let go were a writer and art staffer for alternative newspaper Las Vegas Weekly, and a business development executive. Some of the released employees were veterans of Greenspun, with 10 years or more of experience at the company.

Other Greenspun publications include Las Vegas Magazine, Vegas2Go, VegasGolfer and Vegas, a monthly celebrity, style and gossip magazine.

Greenspun also prints and distributes the Home News, a weekly community newspaper with eight regional editions across the Las Vegas Valley.

It's not the first time this year Greenspun Media Group streamlined its operations.

The publisher announced in March that it would halt monthly distribution of Las Vegas Life, a glossy lifestyle magazine, and transform the title into a once-a-year "Best Of" effort.

They didn't announce layoffs at the time.

Michael Carr, Greenspun Media Group's president, said in a statement then that economic issues including falling housing prices and rising fuel costs forced a re-evaluation of the magazine's business strategies and operations.

Greenspun Media also owns Niche Media Holdings, which publishes luxury lifestyle magazines in high-end markets including Aspen, Colo.; Atlanta; Boston; Los Angeles; New York; Chicago; and Philadelphia. It prints in-house magazines for The Venetian, the Palazzo and Wynn Las Vegas.

The Greenspun family of Henderson owns the media group. Through umbrella company Greenspun Corp., the Greenspuns also own the Las Vegas Sun, Web sites Vegas.com and LasVegas.com, development business American Nevada Co. and KTUD-TV, Channel 14.

The Las Vegas Sun has a joint-operating agreement with the Review-Journal under which the Review-Journal handles both papers' advertising sales, printing, circulation and distribution.

The Sun was a stand-alone afternoon daily with a circulation of about 28,000 when a 2005 restructuring of the joint operating agreement transformed the Sun into a six- to 10-page insert inside the Review-Journal, a daily newspaper with a weekday circulation of about 165,000 and a Sunday distribution of roughly 240,000.

In December, Tribune Co. of Chicago named Brian Greenspun, chairman and chief executive of Greenspun Corp., to Tribune's board of directors after the Greenspun family made a "significant investment" in the company. Industry sources say the Greenspuns are also weighing investments in media outlets in the San Diego market.

Oh wait, they've been doing that for a while haven't they. "Up to 10 percent" huh? Let’s get real and try about 5%. For any reader who didn't know, the "good" people at the RJ see the Greenspun Media Group as the most significant and direct competition for local advertising dollars. Think they have an ax to grind? You bet they do. It doesn’t take a crystal ball to see the future of the RJ, just take a look at the real year-over-year circulation numbers. Population up + circulation down = bye, bye RJ revenue. Innovation isn’t cheap and Greenspun Media Group had to pay a price for their efforts to stay on top of the media marketplace. I’d call that responsible business leadership.

I can tell you first hand that the company did many things to control costs at every turn over the past two quarters. I was there, I saw them doing it. I am not there anymore. I would honestly prefer that they lay off 7% of their staff (they did not lay off 10%) and remain economically sound and continue to support the community that has supported them for all these years. Do I wish I still had my job? Of course I do. Would I rather watch the company that employs the friends I worked with and the peers I still respect fall into an irreversible financial funk? No. For what it's worth, even I understand that they only did what had to be done.

The Sun has a liberal view for those who choose to read it. But it's a choice and a shared view among many. The Home News unlike the RJ's the View actually covers the areas it covers with no advertorial from reporters. My SW View has all Summerlin stuff kinda funny since its for Mtns Edge.

Advertising anywhere is the nature of the beast, you have to do it to survive. Hopefully mom and pop business' have a sales person that will help them find what's right for them. A good salesperson will let them know what's working for other clients even though its a competitor and recommend it. Guess your 7 years experience hasn't taught you morals only to be the salesperson you describe. Greenspun's take pride in all of their publications. You should learn that the Sun was not a copycat but a man's voice that wanted to turn Vegas into a place to raise a family. Give some respect to the Greenspuns. There would not be a Henderson and Vegas would not be what it has become without Hank Greenspun. The money stays in Vegas and helps our local economy. The RJ's money goes back to Arkansas. Truth is all this negativity, does not help. The people need to support local mom and pop advertisers anywhere they see them. Watching business close down everyday so we can support China and shop at Wal-Mart is wrong. Spend that little extra and keep your neighbor in business.

dear greenspun media advertising salespeople...you're next.

i worked in print advertising sales in this town for over 7 years.

the greenspuns and the r-j both have a case of "keeping up with the joneses" with each other.

they just copy each others crappy products.

THEY have a glossy furniture magazine? we need one too.

THEY have a crappy "zoned" paper full of "buy one get one" coupons? we need one too.

THEY have a lesbians who own cats magazine? we need one too.

tomorrow morning diane w. and bob b. over at the r-j will have a meeting and say "how can we tap into the newly homeless market"?

then diane will say "i got it! HOMELESS LIVING! we'll print it on grocery bags."

most people in this town have no idea how these companies get these magazines going.

they trade out 10 - 15 pages to BIG advertisers like macy's, car dealers, etc. in exchange for prizes to give away for contests and display racks at the stores.

this gives the magazines some "heft" and then the local sales staff goes into the hot tub store, or the swimming pool store, or the real estate company and lays down the magazine along with some artsy media kit with some "telling lies with the truth" statistics on it and mr. pool guy advertises in it because he knows pools...not advertising.

in the boom when mr. pool guy was selling 4 pools a month he didn't care about the ad costing $1300 per month, but now he's like "hmmmm...i really don't need that ad right now" so he spends less and they don't need a "reporter" to write fluff advertorial about them.

i was always amazed at how little small business owners know about basic advertising concepts. usually the only education they get is from their sales rep. very sad.

I am getting out of the Army next week but have decided to stay in Iraq because the job market is better, there is a surplus in the governments banks and people like each other better here than in America.

When I was in Middle school you told me we would be out of this war in Iraq in 90 days? Two of my friends were killed today by a roadside bomb that was set there by two teenagers who said America bombed them into rubble, killed their family and have secret masked men (called blackwater) shooting women and children in the streets.

    Love, your son.
