Smoke-free casino favored in Mississippi

BILOXI, Miss. -- When it comes to developing a new tourist destination on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, most respondents in a recent study said they would prefer a smoke-free casino.

The study was commissioned by the Mississippi Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau. But officials said the study probably will not boost any smoking-ban proposal.

  • That is because casinos in Atlantic City, Colorado and Illinois have said they have lost millions of dollars because of smoking bans. Atlantic City's casinos tried to ban smoking for one month, but with the sluggish economy, city officials repealed the ban.

Also, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board released a report showing gaming machines in smoking sections earn up to 120 percent more, depending on the casino.

Will Mississippi ever see through the smoke and realize that this is a health concern OR will the state see this as the price they are willing to pay for putting profit first at the expense of public and worker health?

No one should breathe toxic secondhand smoke.

    Breathing is not a choice.

(DUH) I merrily stated nowhere have I seen an obit where it states cause of death from second hand smoke. I still think if one smokes that is their right as it is NOT illegal. RE: Virga, come on, there are much more nastier things to stick in ones mouth.....RE: David, bring your germs to the casino that is your right. It is also my right to cash out with smoke in hand and move if I don't care to sit and listen to your wicked throat noises, just as it is your right to stay away from me or anyone with a cigarette in hand. DUH. Common sense people!

It is illegal and there are criminal penalties if you get caught. It is a fact that secondhand smoke harms the health of both staff and customers at any business that allows smoking. Ask your family doctor or just about any doctor for that matter. And hopefully you can manage to calm down a little before you do so.

No one forced you to go into the casino and "choke" let alone work there and complain after the fact when you knew what you were getting into when you accepted the job. Right or wrong too many rights are being taken away. Since when did smoking become an illegal drug. At least smokers don't get behind the wheel and drive impaired from it. I will be in Las Vegas next month and you bet I will be smoking. If you don't like it, take your stinking perfume, body odor, drunken stench breath self else where. You non smokers are NOT superior!
