LVCVA hire will combat terrorism

Board OKs cash for intelligence analyst

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority wants locals and tourists to feel safe along the resort corridor, and the agency could spend as much as $480,000 in the next three years meeting that goal.

The authority's board approved the funding on Tuesday during its monthly meeting. The money will finance the hiring of an intelligence analyst who will work for the Metropolitan Police Department in its Southern Nevada Counter-Terror Center. The analyst will read narrative documents and scrub suspicious-activities reports to look for information on possible crimes and to seek out connections that could indicate terrorists are planning coordinated attacks.

  • Ray Suppe, security director for the authority, said he believes it's the first position of its kind at any convention and visitors' agency in the nation.

Michael Hart, editor-in-chief of Tradeshow Week magazine, said he hasn't heard of any other visitors' agencies adding such analysts. Security was top-of-mind after the terrorism of Sept. 11, 2001, Hart said, but concerns about such attacks have receded in the eight years since.

"I can't imagine anyone picking a trade show destination or making a decision about going to a trade show because they're afraid of personal danger," Hart said. "If this works for them (the authority) and it helps them draw people, that's good. But I can't imagine there's a serious competition between New York and Las Vegas over which city is safer."

Hart also said he didn't think Las Vegas was any more or less safe than any other destination in the country.

Impetus for the position didn't come from any specific threats, or from concerns that Las Vegas faces higher risks from terrorism or crime, Suppe said. The authority conceived of the job two years ago in an effort to head off crime and terror before they happen. Initially, rotating members of the Security Chiefs Association were to fill the job. But once the police department opened its counterterror center and began working through the center with other public agencies, the authority decided the best route was to hire an experienced analyst whom Metro would supervise every day.

"It was obvious to us that tourism needed a seat at the table," Suppe said. "Tourism is the No. 1 industry in Southern Nevada, and we wanted to be a part of keeping the tourists and citizens of Las Vegas safe and secure."

Greg McCurdy, deputy chief of Metro's Homeland Security Division, said the department is conducting its final interviews to fill the job, and it will perform background checks on the finalists. Sheriff Doug Gillespie will appoint the analyst once the search is complete.

In The Twilight Zone wrote on September 05, 2009 09:02 AM: Some of these comments are right on the money! Although I DO NOT believe LVCVA should be abolished, the top brass need a spanking. In the midst of a Recession, they seek to hire this "necessary" high paying position, while seeking to cut front line workers pay, or lay off 50% of the blue collar workers who work for the organization. This is an organization that has added more high paying white collar jobs to the roster(while front line workers #'s remain unchanged) since a steady economic boom starting 2002. Keeping in mind their mission statement:
"To attract visitors by promoting Las Vegas as the world's most desirable destination for leisure and business travel."
    I ask this;
What is LVCVA doing to KEEP visitors happy once they have attracted them? If they are attending an event held at LVCC, These suit and tie guys will have little or nothing to do with customers, visitors, attendees, delegates, etc... being satisfied with their level of service. WHO NEEDS "WORKERS" LVCVA; hire ALL VP's and managers...the new theme of three piece suited plumbers, security, and custodians will be GROUNDBREAKING!

    Are you new in town?

    Or, living in dreamland?

The LVCVA couldn't care less about saving folk's jobs!! (LOL)

    The LVCVA is heartless.

There is no concern for LV residents, other than their priviledged few employees who make way more than what they're worth.

The LVCVA only cares about ... the LVCVA.

Trojan wrote on August 16, 2009 05:13 PM: It looks like we have an entirely new form of terrorist. One who will enter our city with the sole and exclusive intent of disrupting tourism. Are the Madrassa's of Iran pumping out tourist industry haters as a unique form of attack? That is what you would have to believe with the appointment of this new position when you factor in that a half dozen competent agencies already gleen over all available data. Is this some kind of a payback to the LVCVA for all of the land it has donated to metro? Is this an attemot to introduce a position that will have access to classified information so that it can be fed back to the cronies behind LVCVA? You better believe it. This appointment itself deserves scrutiny by the FBI (and those pushing for it) to determine why another player needs to be inserted into an already covered game.

lisaleo27 wrote on August 15, 2009 10:40 AM: What the LVCVA needs is a more aggressive campaign to combat the political terrorism of the AIG Affect that is killing the convention industry and crushing jobs. The entire meeting and hospitality (including casinos) industries are under attack by the media, that meetings and conventions are frivolous waste of funding, instead of a necessary tool of keeping business flowing.
IF your car has a flat tire, don't drain the engine of the oil and expect it to run.
This destination lost $140 Million plus this year in confirmed business... That means a loss of tax revenue, loss of dinners in restaurants, loss of taxi rides, loss of events hiring temp and hourly workers, loss of union hours (where are THEY??? hiding making issues that don't really matter to their member, afraid of political interaction)and loss of man hours at every casino. We have the Huge City Center opening, and the 'if we build it they will come' does not hold true. It is further flooding a over saturate marketplace.
Reid and Titus are depending on 'Tourism' well news flash... CA and AZ are hurting just as bad, and they are not driving in droves to dump cash in our economy. WE NEED MEETINGS OF ALL SIZES TO KEEP THE ECONOMY GOING here and in the US.
IF the casino/hotel/CVA workers are loosing their jobs it is affecting their mortgages, eating out, buying clothes, cars and using the services of other small businesses.
Please address this some where, PR is needed and fast, or we will be in a worse situation next year as the commercial markets fall, which we haven't seen the bottom of yet, and housing will continue to drop.
    So frustrating.
LVCVA does not need to be abolished, it needs to step up with an aggressive fight to save jobs.

    I'd vote for that!!

It's not just the Firemen salaries. Take a good look at the LVCVA salaries!! LVCVA spends like a drunken sailor and refuses to justify their expenditures of TAX dollars. Go figure.

ricky wrote on August 14, 2009 07:39 PM: To: YeahRight

Yeah, I believe you're right!! Seems someone is looking to put a friend (or family member) to work; that's the way the LVCVA always operates. It's never about who's qualified, but it's always about who's related to whom.

That's the exact way Ray Suppe got his job at the LVCVA in the first place: NEPOTISM, big time!! He was roughly HALF the age of all other officers due to the "past law enforcement experience" requirement for security officers.

When Ray Suppe was hired, he was the only person ever hired as a security officer that did not have prior law enforcement experience.

He got the job because of his family connections, already employed with the LVCVA, such as Gayle Suppe (his mom perhaps??)

Ray Suppe, as the security director for the authority, makes about as much sense as this new 3-year, almost half a million dollar position, that is NOT a necessary position for a convention / visitors agency anywhere!!

Someone asked, ... Why do we need such a ridiculous and probably another overpaid position?

Answer: We DON'T. It's going to be a good paying job for someone's family member.

Someone asked, ... Why isn't Suppe reading the news and doing the analyzing?

Better yet, tell us ... Why is Suppe even the security director of the LVCVA?!?

Good thing the LVCA will be there to catch all those items that metro will miss! Looks to me like somebody is looking to put a friend to work in a position that is needed about as much as a screen door on a submarine. What a joke, and who do these people think are buying this?
