The Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce wants the business community to "wake up."
The chamber is bringing a fiscal wake-up tour to Las Vegas at noon Wednesday at the Rio, 3700 W. Flamingo Road. The economic burden of 78 million retiring baby boomers over the next 20 years is something that must be addressed, chamber public relations director Cara Roberts said.
"We will be talking about the long-range consequences on the U.S. budget and the U.S. economy," she said. "As a consequence, it will be less money for the U.S. to spend on infrastructure and education. We take it as a real consequence and an important message to the business community."
Organizers of the event want to make businesses aware of the threat of entitlements to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security could put on the federal revenue over the next 20 years.
David Walker, the comptroller general of the United States, and Robert Bixby, the executive director of the Concord Coalition, a grass-roots organization advocating for fiscal responsibility, will speak at the event.
Alison Acosta Fraser, the director of the Heritage Foundation's Roe Institute for Economic Policy Studies; and Isabel Sawhill, a senior fellow on economic studies at the Brookings Institute will also speak.
