Allegiant Travel Co. has decided to zag while most other airlines zig.

During January, the Las Vegas-based airlines and travel booking company saw its passenger counts rise 5.6 percent compared with the same month last year, to 501,000 on both scheduled and charter flights. This came on a 3 percent increase in the number of flights.

Factoring for longer average flights, however, the seat occupancy rate declined 1.1 percentage points, to 87.1 percent.

This came at a time when schedules of several major airlines have either been flat or slightly down. Allegiant throttled back a year ago in the face of sharply higher fuel prices, but has resumed growth now that it has raised fares and fuel price hikes have slowed.
