Major solar power plant proposed

KINGMAN, Ariz. -- A solar power plant being billed as the largest in the United States is being proposed for a site outside Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

Lake Havasu-based Needle Mountain Power LLC wants to build on a 10,300- acre site near the junction of Interstate 40 and State Route 95, which had been proposed for the master-planned community of Sterling.

The massive plant would cost $5 billion to $6 billion to build and could generate up to 1,200 megawatts of electricity, according to consulting engineer Michael Clinton. By comparison, the solar array on 140 acres of Nellis Air Force Base land generates 15 megawatts. Needle Mountain Power has an option to purchase the property pending approvals of various permits.

"I really believe the permits are the significant issues," Clinton said. "But I think we're positioned to where our permitting process is going to be far less complex than any of the others that are out there today."

The ability to connect to the Western Arizona Power Administration transmission lines that cross the parcel is a plus, he said, because it minimizes need for the type of environmental study needed if the connection line had to travel across public or private lands. The company plans to use photovoltaic and other water-friendly technology that should reduce opposition to the project, he said.

Mohave County Supervisor Buster Johnson said the plant will offer construction jobs, operating jobs and an increased tax base.

"The size of it is obviously a feather in the cap for Mohave County and the state of Arizona, if we're able to get this plant located here," Johnson said.

Solar is very inefficient and to top it off it doesn't work at night... and it shades hundreds of acres that plants and tortoises need to survive. Hoover Dam provides electricity 24 x 7 and it's all green power -- and there's plenty of water being stored upstream at Parker Dam. Solar is a waste of my tax dollars and only makes "greenies" and politicians feel good to mention the name. Stop wasting my tax dollars Harry Reid. Harry must sleep better at night thinking he'll get votes if he mentions "major solar project" one more time!

Yea, and I'm betting you will be one of the FIRST people who complain when they don't have the power availabile in the future (like you do now).

Just what are YOU willing to give up in order to have solar (or wind for that matter) power replace coal fired plants without a nuclear powered future? Your AC during the summer? Your lighting at night? Your applicances? These technologies CAN NOT sustain our present power consumption (an interesting fact that nobody is willing to advertise).

Please let us know, because with Obama/Reid at the helm and a ball-less energy secretary we are headed for a nation that just might be making these kinds of decisions in the future.

Hey, maybe THIS is the change Obama was talking about!

Human error. People seem to forget that we all make mistakes. Only with nuke plants, you have no room for error. And they attract terrorism. Who wants one in their back yard? Not me. Give me solar and wind plants. They'll get cheaper and more efficient over time. And we can all breathe easier. And enjoy the clear view. And our children will thank us for actually doing something smart. Think about that as you jump into your SUV and get on the cell phone while lighting up your cigarette.

Ever hear of 3 mile island? Nuclear waste transportation and storage?

I'll take solar, thank you!!!

ObamasTeleprompter wrote on January 26, 2010 07:39 AM: A nuclear power plant takes up less than 1000 acres as opposed to this project with will span over 10,000 acres. In addition, a nuclear power plant can put out over 300% power than this solar project. Finally, nuclear power produces energy 24 hours a day and is unaffected by the weather.
