United Way will start annual tax preparation service

The United Way of Southern Nevada starts its annual tax preparation services with a ceremony starting at 9 a.m. today .
Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman, state Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford, D-Las Vegas, and local United Way CEO Cass Palmer will all speak at the Doc Pearson Community center at 1625 W. Carey Ave. in North Las Vegas.
United Way volunteers will help prepare returns for people whose annual household income is less than $50,000. In particular, Internal Revenue Service statistics show that as many as one-fourth of the filers in that bracket do not claim the earned income tax credit, which can be worth as much as $5,751 per family.
The tax service, a joint venture with the charitable agency, the IRS and other groups, will run through April 17.
