Hello, Dolly

Stand out in a crowd for all the right reasons

Dolly Parton sure knows how to stand out in a crowd. Too bad it's for all the wrong reasons. Usually, we can find at least one piece in a horrendous outfit that proves the fashion criminal had the right idea; not this time. Thus, we had to dig really deep to come up with an alternative head-to-toe look that we hope upholds the intentions behind such a disaster as this outfit Parton wore to the 23rd grand opening of Dollywood.

First, the color combination. She looks like the condiment tray at a hot dog stand. When you start with a mustard pant suit, don't finish with a ketchup corset vest. Instead, go for a shade of yellow that falls in line with spring trends: sunshine yellow. And, trade in the blazer for a more modern silhouette, such as this cropped A-line jacket.

  • A flowy, orange V-neck top complements the yellow much better and allows the country singer to still showcase her favorite feature without suffocating us with it. We continued the flowers with the top, but rather than the embroidered pillow look, we leaned toward a subtle floral print.

As for the greetings she so proudly exposes on the inside of her jacket, we can only assume that Parton was trying to make a statement. How about a statement that isn't so literal ("Hi," "Bye") but still lets her country western roots shine through? The best way to do that: designer boot cut denim. This pair by Paige Denim lends well to the jacket as it balances its volume with a narrow line. The dark wash is age-appropriate and chic.

Lastly, we couldn't justify cowboy boots in spring. You can't go wrong with nude. A pointed toe slingback better flatters this updated, improved outfit.

If you want to stand out in a crowd, try not to follow Parton's poor example. Consider these choices instead.

Jason wrote on April 27, 2008 07:24 PM: Why are you picking on Dolly? This is not only a great outfit but it does something good fashion should always try to do: Make a statement. With this outfit Dolly is paying tribute to her mentor and friend, country legend Porter Wagoner who died in October from cancer. Porter was a fan of flashy suits with anything on them that sparkled, like rhinestones. He and Dolly had very similar taste in clothes and it shows in this outfit. Also, one of Porter's trademarks was that he would have "Hi" sewn into the lining of his jackets, many of which are on display in the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, TN and draw many visitors. When he was performing he would always open his coat [that said "Hi" to the crowd] which always got a round of applause from the audience. Porter was a very flashy, yet well-dressed performer and he knew, just as Dolly does, that certain outfits garner alot of attention. Outfits such as the one Dolly wore at Dollywood during her Porter tribute sparkle under the stage lights which only adds to the show. Also, Dolly is friends with Diane von Furstenberg so if she wanted to wear some of her clothes I'm sure she very easily could do so.

The 'Hi' and 'Bye' were like a Porter trademark.. Dolly doesn't care about the fashion critics, but at least DO YOUR RESEARCH FIRST!

It looked fine on her and it certainly would have looked fine on Porter and that's who she was honoring. If Dolly didn't dress like "Dolly", I wouldn't recognize her!

forget what/who the outfit was for , return the damn thang it didn't fit properly ,while dolly is an icon , she should've had someone inside her inner circle tell her to leave the jacket buttoned.the red camo needed work - hopefully we'll never see this outfit again - but knowing dolly , she'll recycle it with a new twist .

Crystal wrote on April 26, 2008 06:29 AM: If you were aware of the reason behind this outfit, you would not be so harsh to Dolly. She wore this to a tribute concert for her dear Friend, Porter Wagoner - Who loved these outfits. She made the show Porter style complete with the outfit, hair, boots, and even her band was decked out in these suits, and she only sang Porter songs.
Next time you want to criticize someones clothing, make sure you find out the purpose behind the outfit and then keep your negative opinions to yourself.
