Hair Wars

Six local salons, and one from out of town, pulled out their best tress tricks last weekend for the national hair competition, Hair Wars. Held at Krave, next to Planet Hollywood Resort, the event started at midnight, but the competitors had been teasing, braiding, twisting, dying, cutting, extending, straightening, curling, crimping and primping since breakfast. Their labor ended with an entertaining, crowd-pleasing show full of outrageous, not-meant-for-the-real-world locks.

Judges, including Ben Moline, one of the finalists from Bravo TV's "Shear Genius," chose Hot Box as the show's victor with salons Tonic and Gemini, based in Utah, tying for second and Electric Chair coming in third place.

  • Hot Box chose a Japanese theme, complete with geishas and samurai swords. The jet black hair came extravagantly ornamented with feathers, tiny umbrellas, chopsticks and other decorations that looked as if they were pulled off the set of "Memoirs of a Geisha."

Tonic salon's presentation looked like Candy Land came to life. Balloons, bubblegum colors and bold bouffants put the crowd in a Willy Wonka state of mind. A model sporting a candy cane 'do with peppermint swirls was the hit of the show.

Gemini's show concentrated on the animal kindgom, complete with untamed looks and feline costumes while Electric Chair combined the glamorous (Fergie's song of the same name introduced the set) with the gritty. Frilly costumes and crimped bouffants intermingled with edgy, punk looks.

The local competition is just the beginning. Now, each of the four selected salons advance to the national competition, Supreme Salon Tours, held next summer in Las Vegas, where they will go coif-to-coif with top salons from Phoenix, Miami, Hollywood, New York and Chicago. May the best (Las Vegas) salon win.

David wrote on July 26, 2007 04:42 AM: It's great that the hair world is active in showcasing creative hair styles and marketing hair as performance art, but promoters and producers need to be original in their show titles. Everyone knows that the 'Real' Hair Wars is based out of Detroit and has been traveling the U.S. (including several times in Las Vegas) since 1994 and has been on several major TV shows, including America's Next Top Model and Oprah.
