THE R-J GOES TO A PARTY: Heat no match for popularity of Philharmonic's holiday show

David Itkin made his debut as the new Las Vegas Philharmonic music director and conductor on the Fourth of July, normally a blast furnace type of day in the valley.

But his introduction during the orchestra's annual "Star Spangled Spectacular" was even more spectacular when the city came one degree shy of setting a record for the date, officially at 114, according to the National Weather Service. (The record is 115, set in 1985.)

Itkin told the audience he had arrived in Las Vegas just four days before the concert and was amazed to find capacity attendance on such a hot day. The traditional concert featured patriotic music and a fireworks show.

It was a family-style Independence Day celebration at Hills Park, with picnics on the lawn, or for those who wished to indulge, a supper served under the pavilion.

  • At Your Service Caterers set up a buffet under the tent, offering traditional fried chicken and barbecued ribs accompanied by potato, macaroni and Caesar salads; baked beans; corn bread; and fresh strawberries with cream and peach cobbler.

Libations were cold beer, wine, soft drinks and plenty of bottled water.

Seen among the Philharmonic's supporters were Nancy and Kell Houssels, Mari and Thom Landers, Jeri and Richard Crawford, Diane Carlson, Dedee Nave, Diane and Patrick Clary, Anita Meyer, Debbie and Bill Granda, Dottie and Bob Sperling, Alisa Nave, Jan Craddock, Dennis Ortwein, Heather Latimer, Donna Courson, Laura and David Mulkey, Zelda and Ernie Spickler, the Alan Feldman family, Libby Bjerke, and David London and Alma Davies.

Philharmonic Guild President Juliana McRae, and the Philharmonic's Executive Director Philip Koslow also were on hand.

The program opened with Philharmonic President and Chief Executive Officer William Freyd thanking the Philharmonic Guild volunteers and production and design staff for their efforts in making the event a success. He also thanked the sponsors, particularly the Howard Hughes Corp., Summerlin, for sponsoring and underwriting the evening's performance.

Itkin began the program with his arrangement of "Great America," followed by "Salute to the Big Apple."

Two special guests appearing from "Phantom -- The Las Vegas Spectacular" were Elizabeth Loyacano, soprano, and Ted Keegan, tenor. Loyacano sang "I Could Have Danced All Night" and "If I Loved You." Keegan offered "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat" and "Sara Lee." They shared a duet of "People Will Say We're in Love."

The music continued with Associate Conductor Richard Lee conducting his arrangements of "Raiders March" and the "Battle Hymn of the Republic."

The orchestra played within a giant white shell, with the fireworks making a dramatic display behind it, especially during the "1812 Overture." Conductor Itkin then continued with the medley of John Philip Sousa's "Washington Post," "Semper Fidelis" and "The Stars and Stripes Forever," played in sync with fireworks by Zambelli lighting up the sky.

Summer break: Zoe Brown hosted a pleasant reprieve from the summer heat by inviting friends for dinner at the Las Vegas Country Club on Sunday.

Enjoying the menu and relaxed conversation were Frances and Richard "Mac" MacDonald, Beverly and Mike Mykisen, Gianna and James "Bucky" Buchanan, Paul Huffey, and Sylvia and Richard Renn.
