ON THE SET: CINEMA CITYLas Vegas is Cinema City

Moviemakers can't resist lure of glittering casinos, stark desert

Ever since "Hazards of Helen" in 1915, Hollywood has rolled in to roll in Las Vegas. More than 500 movies bear the made-in-Vegas brand. Last year alone, 32 were added to the list, according to the Nevada Film Office.

The city appeals to moviemakers because it is only 265 miles from Los Angeles, doesn't require film permits to shoot indoors on private property (many municipalities do), and has a ready-to-work crew base of at least 400.

Plus, it's Vegas, baby.

Here's a guide to some of the films shot in the Las Vegas Valley -- and environs -- and the locations of their most iconic scenes. (Yes, we know we've skipped one of your favorite movies, but there's no space to list them all.)

Thanks to the Nevada Film Office, and various properties, for assisting.

Mary Grego-Smith wrote on November 08, 2009 06:55 PM: Levitan forgot one movie that was made here in the early '80s. It was "Over the Top" starring Sylvester Stallone. My husband had a small part in it as a sky cap at the airport.

PLease check your facts more carefully!

Here is the complete list of locations for the Movie "21". It was filmed in many locations including the Hard Rock.

Jay from Summerlin wrote on November 08, 2009 12:43 PM: Corey, the city appeals to filmmakers SOLELY because the story TAKES PLACE in Las Vegas.

This is a ridiculous article.

Why are you still on the RJ's payroll? Your stories offer absolutely no substance. Do you have blackmail material on Sherman?

Ted wrote on November 08, 2009 12:03 PM: Yes, there are too many to list them all. But Las Vegas, the Mirage and the National Rodeo Finals played such an integral part of the last third of Pure Country, that it is a shame to leave it off any primary list.

Tom Lewis wrote on November 08, 2009 05:43 AM: Who are you kidding? Las Vegas has nothing to offer besides the locations. Las Vegas is a location there is no support here ... no sound stage, no feature equipment packages, no labor force. There aren't 400 qualified techs for feature work. There isn't even a film incentive to attact the producer's attention. People come here because they have to .. it's written into the scipt. Then, they bring in their crew, their own equipment and maybe pick up a few extra crew members and an extra light or two. Maybe instead of blowing smoke you should actually look into the sad state of affairs the film/video industry is in.
Support an incentive, support the construction of a stage facility. Do something except blow smoke.

Enne Bondd wrote on November 08, 2009 03:07 AM: PLease check your facts more carefully. The movie 21 with Kevin Spacey. There were many scenes filmed at the Red Rock Casino not Hard Rock Casino.
