I want to welcome you to the first issue we have ever published totally dedicated to mothers. As the 100th anniversary of Mother’s Day will be celebrated on May 11th, we thought it would be fabulous to commemorate mom with her very own issue. And we found plenty of mothers to celebrate: career moms, stay-at-home moms, moms with incredible artistic talents, moms with a cause and even new moms.
Writer Ellen Sterling shares the stories of four couples who wanted to experience parenthood so badly they endured fertility treatments to make their dreams come true. Her story “Making Miracles” highlights Bruce Shapiro, MD and Said T. Daneshmand, M.D. of the Fertility Center of Las Vegas and their expertise of giving the gift of life.
“The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.” ~Rajneesh
The It Girls, a local group made up of mothers who advocate for the intellectually disabled, tells the story of their founding to Luxury scribe Cindi Maciolek. It’s a heartwarming article that illustrates how powerful the Las Vegas community can be when it gets behind a cause.
“A mother will always go to bat for her child, but it’s overwhelming to see someone else working just as hard as you. We don’t just mother our own children. We mother the people our hearts are open to.” ~Melinda Brown
In my story “Super Moms – Career Mothers Anchor Both Home and Workplace,” I profile three well-known working mothers who come into your living rooms daily. Television news personalities Sue Manteris, Colleen May and Heidi Hayes reveal how they juggle career and motherhood.
“Any mother could perform the jobs of several air traffic controllers with ease.” ~Lisa Alther
And BJ Dugan discovers the latest trend in preparing for baby – The Babymoon. Local resorts offer relaxing packages that give the mother-to-be one last hurrah before her little bundle of joy arrives.
“A mother’s happiness is like a beacon, lighting up the future but reflected also on the past in the guise of fond memories.” ~Honoré de Balzac
And finally to my own mother, I have no words to express myself adequately enough but look to the perfectly communicated words of Graycie Harmon:
My mom is a never-ending song in my heart of comfort, happiness, and being. I may sometimes forget the words but I always remember the tune.
Happy Mother’s Day!
