A brush fire in the northwest valley grew to 45 acres and continued to burn Tuesday night.

Bureau of Land Management officials said the fire, dubbed "La Madre," was showing signs of "light to moderate" activity.

The cause of the fire, which began three miles northwest of the Las Vegas Beltway and Summerlin Parkway, was unknown, officials said.

The blaze was not a threat to structures.

Meanwhile, another blaze began at the Nevada National Security Site, the former nuclear test site 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas. Last week, fires consumed more than 6,000 acres near the site. Officials at the test site monitored radiation levels to make sure the flames didn't stir up remnants of decades-old detonations.

Kirsten Kellogg, a spokeswoman for the security site, said Tuesday's fire was most likely sparked by a lightning strike last week that smoldered throughout the week.

The fire was located at the north-central portion of the site, commonly known as Area 19.

Kellogg said there was no infrastructure damage or contamination in the area. All employees were accounted for Tuesday night, she said.

The wildfire was being fought through the air with the assistance of the Bureau of Land Management.

Kellogg did not have an estimated size for the fire.

    Thank you, Dr. Dickinson.

Every time I read this article I am amazed. If we the people were as stupid as the authorities believe, we should all have to take turns feeding each other.
When they used to talk about radiation contamination it was always "...with a half life of 25,000 years...." Now, because it suits them, there is no radiation hazard with a fire burning on the grounds of above ground Nuclear weapons tests just 50 years ago. Not just a test, dozens of tests. These tests took place all over the test site. Area 18, 17 and 19 had tests as part of the Sudan project. These were only half covered up with back fill. The whole purpose was to see how much contamination would result from such a test. Result...Too much to be feasible.

My apologies to the posters I criticicized. LVRJ "writer" Mike Blaskey claims the fire is in the Northwest Valley. Mike...Look out your window. See the smoke out there at the alignment with Alta.
Now where is Alta in valley? Out there with Deer Springs, Grand Teton and Elkhorn? No, it is about 1 block south of center line.
That would place it damn near due west.

Bigcubsfan! I realize that and you didn't get the pun intended. You need to get a life, or at least, some sense of intelligence.

Do most of the posters to this article just wake up, stumble to their computers and comment. Most of do not even have the correct location, fire department or context. What the hell are you responding to?
It was a private owned helicopter dumping water, BLM firefighters and the fire is no where near where Jim Rhodes wants to build homes. The terrain is so steep a chinese farmer couldn't live there.
I know most of you live in your parents basements, open a window, exhale, now breathe deep.

@ AmericanMade...The Chinese won't even build in Las Vegas. If you were from here you would realize the swamps burn every year, like clock work. It is spontaneous combustion from all the BS flushed in Las Vegas everyday.

AWWWW I was kidding Cubsfan, your name alone dictates you have to be understanding, have a sense of humor, and familiar with a bit of disappointment. ;-)
