NORM: Attorney warns of rush to judge

David Copperfield's attorney says, "People should keep the Duke lacrosse case in mind" before passing judgment on the magician.

"I'm 100 percent convinced he hasn't done anything," Las Vegas defense attorney David Chesnoff said Sunday, while preparing for a meeting with the FBI about sexual misconduct allegations tied to a raid on Copperfield's Las Vegas warehouse.

Copperfield and another man were spotted Sunday on a plane bound for Los Angeles from Las Vegas.

Asked whether he was with Copperfield in Los Angeles, Chesnoff said, "I have nothing to say about that."

  • In another development, the Seattle Times reported Sunday that the FBI is denying a Las Vegas TV station report that federal agents seized nearly $2 million in cash during the raid.

"No currency was seized during our investigating activity in Las Vegas," said Seattle FBI Special Agent Robbie Burroughs. "Media reports to the contrary are false."

Copperfield, 51, is under investigation of possible sexual misconduct with a Seattle woman while in the Bahamas, federal law enforcement authorities have privately told the Times.

"It's really outrageous and so far from the truth," said Chesnoff, who has represented several high-profile celebrities, including Martha Stewart, Britney Spears, Celine Dion's husband, Rene Angelil, Suge Knight, Nicky Hilton and Scott Weiland.

The Duke case involved rape charges by a stripper and escort against members of the lacrosse team. Charges were dropped earlier this year, and three players were declared innocent after the coach was fired and the season canceled.

    CHER DEAL DEAD?

Cher's deal with Caesars Palace has fallen through, and a search is back on for a new headliner to share the Colosseum with Bette Midler.

Meantime, I'm hearing Mariah Carey, the husband-wife superstar duo of Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, Stevie Wonder and Whitney Houston are in talks with local properties.

Cher, one of the biggest-selling artists of all-time, had announced more than a year ago on late-night television that she had a deal with Caesars Palace. But there have been rumblings that Caesars was backing away from the contract length she sought because she was overexposed from many "farewell" tours.

Caesars' response: "Can't confirm or deny."

Carey, Houston and Barbra Streisand are among a handful of female entertainers who are considered to be popular enough to fill the 4,000-seat Colosseum, which Dion has packed since 2003. She leaves Dec. 15, and Midler opens in February.

He was charged with the murder of Alexander Harris, a 7 year old boy who found dead underneath a trailer at Primmadonna Casino. The chief deputy district attorney Melvyn T. Harmon at the time had insufficient evidence and went on a witchhunt and took Mr. Haupt's life and turned it upside down. Former D.A. Harmon just about put an innocent life on the stakes.

Full of energy, laughs, and thrills! I'll be sad to see this show end.

You really think he slaughtered 2 people, drove home, got ready for his trip to Chicago, and then flew away?? All without getting one drop of blood in his truck, his driveway, his house?? And what about the other glove that mysteriously appeared behind his house? Frame Attempt! I will say he was probably present when it happened, just like he was present at the hotel room in the Palace Station. Then again, if his ex-wife wasn't such a tramp, he wouldn't have been so pissed.

There are many cases that exemplify
the fact that the district attorney, public defender, and the courts here in Nevada do not consider the totality of the circumstances when deciding to charge an individual.

For anyone who remembers the problems in the public defender's office back in 2000-2003 exposed by nacdl.org; and later the district attorney's 'Early Resolution Program', there are cases which have resulted in violations of the 14th, 5th, and 6th amendments; and remain unresolved.

Ever wonder what happened to the people effected by those violations?

If the FBI is all over the magician's case; don't think they aren't looking into matters like these.. they are!!

The Constitution is what they are about.

Nifong got nailed by his own state powers that be. Had they not intervened, the Department of Justice would have.

State officials can not cover up Constitutional violations without federal consequences.

In the interests of justice, States are obligated to resolve constitutional violations before it becomes necessary for federal involvement; and in all cases, look at the constitutional impact before issuing a warrant.

In the Duke lacross matter, to prevent a broader scenario involving other state officials, Nifong had to be nailed.

Again, there are issues here in Nevada like the above, that remain unresolved

Richard wrote on October 22, 2007 10:03 AM: A "not guilty"verdict,is a far cry from being innocent. Only an idiot could look at the evidence against O.J. and think he is "not guilty." Apparently his jury was lucky enough to have twelve of them, although they're not hard to find in LA.: Hopefully they'll be a little harder to find in Vegas.
As for David Copperfield, if his lawyer says he's 100% innocent that's good enough for me. We all know a defense attorney would never lie or try to circumvent justice. If you don't believe me, ask Oscar Goodman. Old Oscar swore that Anthony Spilotro was a legitimate businessman who was being unjustly persecuted by the government. I believed him, who wouldn't.

Michael W. wrote on October 22, 2007 09:29 AM: "Don't rush to judgement"...how funny it is that people forget these things when certain people, say, OJ Simpson are ivolved. As in the Duke lacrosse players' case, they were found not guilty, as was Mr. Simpson, but for some unexplainable reason, not guilty doesn't mean the same across the board.

Clock wrote on October 22, 2007 07:21 AM: Oh we always think about the Duke lacrosse trial, just another power happy DA's trying to destroy someones lives again. Those people luckily had the money for the fight but look at how many others just get tossed away, there lives taken away because they didn't have the money. Why do these girls do it? Because nothing happens to them if they are found to be lying. We need some DEEP reforms here and fast. The job of a DA is to find the truth not to try to convict at any cost.
