Volunteers prepare to assist area's homeless

Thousands of the valley's homeless are expected on Tuesday to take advantage of dozens of free services, from medical and dental checkups to haircuts and legal help.

Project Homeless Connect, a large-scale annual event for homeless people, is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Cashman Center, near Las Vegas Boulevard and Washington Avenue.

  • The event, formerly called the Stand Down for the Homeless, brings together dozens of city, county and other social service agencies that help the homeless.

Those who attend can get free food and clothing, housing referrals, job placement assistance and other services. Judges from several local jurisdictions will be on site to hear misdemeanor cases and process warrants to help homeless people deal with any outstanding legal issues.

Hundreds of volunteers will help set up, take down and work the event organized by the Nevada Homeless Alliance.

Organizers expect at least 2,000 of the valley's estimated 11,500 homeless people to attend.
