Three deadly crashes occur on Southern Nevada highways

Authorities suspect alcohol or drugs were factors in three fatal wrecks Sunday morning on Southern Nevada highways, the Nevada Highway Patrol said.

The first wreck occurred about 3:30 a.m. on Interstate 15 three miles south of Sloan, Nevada Highway Patrol trooper Kevin Honea said.

  • A man driving north in a Nissan pickup drifted into another lane, struck the back of a GMC Sonoma pickup and then hit the center median wall, Honea said.

The driver of the Nissan, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the Nissan and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, Honea said. The two people in the GMC were uninjured.

The second deadly crash of the morning occurred about 7:30 a.m., just south of the first.

Authorities had closed down two of the three northbound lanes on I-15 because of the collision involving the pickups, but a man driving a Ford SVT Focus approached the slowed traffic at a high rate of speed, Honea said.

The man tried to drive around a Honda sedan but struck an outside median, he said.

The Ford then struck the passenger side of the Honda, pushing it into a parked Nevada Department of Transportation truck, Honea said.

The 80-year-old driver of the Honda was pronounced dead, and his female passenger was airlifted to University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the NDOT truck was taken to UMC with minor injuries.

The driver of the Ford drove away from the crash, headed southbound in the northbound lanes, Honea said. Troopers stopped the driver about five miles away and booked him into the county jail.

A couple of hours later, about 9:30 a.m., a man in his early 20s in a Chevrolet Trailblazer lost control of his vehicle on U.S. Highway 95 at Ann Road, Honea said.

The Trailblazer hit a guardrail and started to roll down the embankment between Ann and U.S. 95, and the driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the Chevrolet, Honea said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

And to those who are mistaken in thinking they are "perfect"...God forgive me for saying this, but should you ever be lying in a ditch, dying you better hope I'm not driving by because that's exactly what I'd like to do...keep driving by!

In that short time I can tell you that he was a kind hearted person who only wanted the best for everyone in his life. He had so much going for him and it is unfortunate that he had to be taken away from us at such an early age. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. God bless.

Lupe wrote on December 04, 2007 03:49 PM: WOW!!!! How people could be so ignorant and think it's ok to make such disgusting comments about a young man that has lost his life. Did we forget that no one is prefect and now there is a family out there without a son, brother, cousin and friend. Before you start passing judgement on peope, ask yourself if you've been perfect? This young man had so much going for his life and to be taken away is horrible. The sad thing is that I don't hate you the people that wrote all those negative comments, but just remember what goes around, comes around and I pray that something like this will never happen to you or your loved ones. For the family of the departed, my prayers and thoughts are with you and your family. He was a kind and genuine person that I got to meet through my friends. What a sad loss yet I know that he is looking down upon each and everyone of you. Take care and God Bless.

You never even knew this person, and you wouldn't cause when you all have time to look at articles online and write things to hurt people; he was out making something of himself, touching lives and being an angel on earth. I look at you and see a waste of life and were my friend was taken from this world too young, horrible people like you will probably live till your 100. That might actually be your punishment as you are such bad and ugly people. This person had an amazing job but was going to leave it and do things for charity and young people. A great man was lost and deserves your respect, not your petty internet comments. If you have anything to say about this, please email me at rlittleton@comcast.net. I know your checking this as I imagine you only wrote this to get someone's attention. Email and then I will give you my number and we can talk about it! Thank you. To everyone that loves the departed, he was taken from us too young. Let him live in your heart everyday and try and act like he did. He was one of the most amazing people I have ever known and I will never forget him!

He would never hurt anyone. Unfortunately, he had to be taken away from us at a young age. I live in Arizona and want to thank those who stopped to help him. Thank you for your kindness. He will be deeply missed. I know he was very special to many people. He was fun, loving and full of life.

He was a loving spirit that only wished the best for anyone. I am so upset and I hope that you come to know who God is beacause if you did you would not say such evil things. Amazing can not even begin to describe him. I am so fortunate to have known him and I send love and prayers to his family. to the evil person I hope that your ingorance does not come back to haunt you one day .
