NORM: Brits show little respect at fight

United Kingdom icons Tom Jones and David Beckham were caught in the middle of a "really nasty" U.S.-British incident Saturday when British fans booed and whistled during the singing of the U.S. national anthem at the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Ricky Hatton fight at the MGM Grand.

Jones, after singing the British anthem on behalf of Hatton, and Beckham, who, like Jones, lives on U.S. soil, squirmed a bit as the rowdy Brits tried drowning the singing of Tyrese Gibson.

"I've never seen anything like it, not even at the Olympics," said Tim Dahlberg, national sports columnist for The Associated Press.

"I saw a photographer on the ring apron giving the finger to the Brits and American writers yelling at them," said Dahlberg, who is based in Las Vegas and has been covering major fights for AP for almost 30 years.

  • "It was really nasty," said Dahlberg, who has witnessed numerous nationalistic incidents in the nine Olympics he has covered.

"It's one thing to root against the other guy, but to disrespect a national anthem was in real bad taste," he added.

Anti-Brit sentiments were still running high well after the fight. When Mayweather arrived at Jet nightclub at The Mirage at 2 a.m., Kid Rock had the deejay play Bruce Springsteen's "Born In The U.S.A.," whipping the club crowd into a frenzy.

    CHRISTMAS GIVERS

Boosted by $5,000 donations from local headliners Toni Braxton and Wayne Brady, deejay Chet Buchanan's annual KLUC-FM, 98.5 Christmas toy drive shattered its previous record for gift cards by taking in more than $50,000.

Other celebrity donations came from George Wallace, Ne-Yo, Boyz II Men, Dane Cook, Mosaic, the Chippendales, Zowie Bowie, Jason Giambi and Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls.

Joe Montana showed up in person and offered an autographed football to the person who donates the most bikes by today. Brady also chipped in 10 bikes.

Buchanan's 12-day stay atop a 30-foot high scaffolding ends at 10 a.m. today at the Nevada Power building, 6226 W. Sahara Ave.

By contrast I never will forget that shortly after September 11,2001 "The Star Spangled Banner" was played during the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. That was a moment all in the U.K. should be proud of.

I and countless other Americans appreciated that.

My guess is that during the US anthem, they were showing Floyd Mayweather Jr. on the big screens inside the arena and the Ricky Hatton supporters were booing Floyd.

I've been to many fights in Las Vegas and have seen and heard the crowd boo the screen images during national anthems even when both fighters are from the same country. I put some of the blame on the video crew for showing the dressing room antics during the national anthems instead of the singer or the country's flag.

    And Spud...very valid point.

At least they didn't fly two planes into the twin towers, or say strap explosives to themselves and take a stroll into the London underground.

Grow the f'k up and vent your anger at the real enemy..

F'kn jingoism... How old are you lot?

So whether it were the French or English in charge when we fought the Revolutionary War it would have made no difference in the outcome. Hence, we would still be speaking English as we are today. I can't brag, my ancestors were in Nottinghamshire at the time of the war.

BritBabe wrote on December 12, 2007 01:43 PM: Fred, we may have needed a little help during WWII but at least we know how to spell - it's "barren" not "baren".

Craig wrote on December 11, 2007 08:20 PM: Brit, you might also say if it weren't for the French, we still might be ruled by England. How bad is that? Having to rely on the French to win a war...
    :)

Craig wrote on December 10, 2007 07:24 PM: Let's face it, the Brits have not been allies in years. Their leaders maybe, but not the country. Regardless, they have never had any class, just watch crappy English soccer. And just to set the record straight for all the English idiots at the Mayweather/Hattan fight, you blokes would all be speaking German if it were not for the United States. And Mark$, if Iraq fans booed the anthem there would be much less "nationalistic fervor." Our goveernment is not bombing the Brits. So if you are anti-american and live in the United States, feel free to leave.
