A car crash in the desert Tuesday morning was staged to try to cover up the slaying of a 4-year-old boy, North Las Vegas police said Wednesday.
The boy's 24-year-old mother, Amber Scott, and her live-in boyfriend, 21-year-old Trevor Carter, were arrested by North Las Vegas police Tuesday evening.
Carter was booked into the North Las Vegas Detention Center on first-degree murder and child abuse charges. Scott is jailed on three counts of child abuse and neglect. Both are Las Vegas residents, police said.
About 9 a.m., Carter called police to a dirt road north of Losee Road and about a mile from Interstate 215.
Carter told officers he had hit a dirt berm after he lost control of the sedan he had been driving there.
Scott was not in the car, but the 4-year-old was -- and he was dead. His 3-year-old sister was also in the vehicle. She was taken to University Medical Center and was in good condition Tuesday.
North Las Vegas police spokesman Sean Walker said the girl, along with another sibling who Walker said he believes is 5 or 6, were in the custody of Child Protective Services on Wednesday.
Walker said that shortly after police arrived at the crash scene they began questioning whether the boy had been killed prior to the accident.
"He's out there in a passenger vehicle in an off-road type of situation, which isn't normal," Walker said.
"To the trained investigator looking at this, there were enough questions about the scene of the accident for them to begin asking questions if what he (Carter) was telling us was true."
Officers eventually reached the conclusion that "this incident was staged by Carter in an attempt to cover up abuse" that the boy had suffered, Walker said.
