JANE ANN MORRISON: Halverson's Web site still lays claim to endorsements from 2006 bid

You'd be amazed at the number of respected businessmen, attorneys, police, firefighters and union groups supporting District Judge Elizabeth Halverson.

The Professional Fire Fighters of Nevada, the Las Vegas Lodge 1 Fraternal Order of Police, the National Law Enforcement Association of Nevada, Nevada Concerned Citizens, Veterans in Politics, the Southern Nevada Central Labor Council and La Voce. Law firms including Cobeaga Law Firm and Mainor, Eglet and Cottle. Staunch Republican businessman Jim Marsh. Attorney Robert Vannah.

  • Her Web site, www.halverson4judge.com, shows a tremendous amount of support in her bid for re-election to Department 23. She listed the site in her paperwork filed with the County Election Department.

Really, it's quite amazing considering the amount of criticism Halverson has faced since last May, and that she is facing 14 counts of violating Nevada's Judicial Code of Conduct. Halverson does have her fans.

However, if you look carefully, the endorsement dates are 2006, not 2008. These were endorsements she received when she was running against perennial candidate Bill Henderson. What we have is not a failure to communicate, but one more obvious example of Halverson's deceitfulness. Potentially, the Nevada Commission on Judicial Discipline could make this a new count against her.

One of Halverson's two opponents, Family Court Judge Stefany Miley, declined to comment Tuesday but provided a list of her own endorsements, which actually are for this year: The Las Vegas Police Protective Association, Communications Workers of America, COPS Nevada Division, Clark County District Attorney Investigators Association and Clark County Courts Deputy Marshals Association.

Miley was elected Family Court judge in 2004 and has two years left in her term. If she fails to win in District Court Department 23, she will retain her job in Family Court Department F.

Somehow I don't think the groups on Halverson's list are likely to keep hanging tight with a judge who has been suspended from the bench while being investigated by the discipline panel. Halverson did not respond to an e-mail seeking comment.

The third candidate in the race is Jason Landess. He said he was disappointed Halverson didn't ask the organizations and people listed whether they still supported her. "It seems unfair to them and misleading to the public to leave those old endorsements on her Web site," he e-mailed.

Landess has been an attorney since 1977, primarily in California and Nevada. He has both civil and criminal courtroom experience and more than 20 years of experience in civil litigation. Last March, a jury awarded him a $16.8 million verdict in a civil case. The case has settled, and he cannot reveal the financial details, but it's obvious Landess has the money to finance a campaign. "I really do not need to depend upon the salary paid to a District Court judge to pay my bills for the rest of my life. I have filed to become a judge because I want to return dignity and competence to our fine judiciary, not because I need a job or want to use that position as a stepping stone for some other office," he said.

I'm sure people and organizations that value their endorsements will be checking Halverson's site to see if they are on her endorsement list. It is possible to withdraw an endorsement.

Political consultant Jim Denton handles judicial races but is not involved with anyone in this particular race. "It's clearly her Web site from two years ago, and attaching it (to her filing document) is clearly misleading the voters. That didn't happen by accident," he said, calling it "deceptive and disingenuous."

You'd think that at this point Halverson would be on her best behavior, especially since Canon 5 of the Nevada Code of Judicial Conduct clearly said judicial candidates "shall not knowingly misrepresent the identity, qualifications, present position or other fact concerning the candidate or an opponent."

If the Nevada Supreme Court decides the Judicial Discipline Commission waited too long to formally charge Halverson on the 14 counts and dismisses the charges against her, the judge has just handed them something new that's potentially charge worthy.

Last September Halverson said: "Give me a chance to try to get a little smarter."

Four months have passed and she may be trying, but misrepresenting her endorsements shows Judge Halverson isn't getting any smarter.

First.. you need to start eating salads for lunch. You are really getting fat.

Second..your column is so lame it is scary. This one took the cake..(or maybe you did..you HAVE been packing on some pounds as of late).

You are such a low rent, low budget columinst. Can't you come up with some real subjects with real facts.

We are bored with your obsession with Halverson. Come up with something more interesting. Or at least something that has some merit.

This attempt a news really missed the mark.

    What a loser you are.

I too saw the tapes.. Halverson never said she was being assulted by Short. She said they were trying to enter her inner chambers and she had already told them they were not welcome. She was under no obligation to let anyone in her chambers who has not been authorized to be in there. What you also failed to mention was the Short was there trying to obtain documents that showed names and proof of ticket fixing done by Spoor. Now, why would Chuck Short who is the Court Administrator bring a terminated employee back to the office she was terminated from to retrive physical evidence of possible illegal or immoral activity? Would'nt Court Admin. want to protect potential evidence? LOL.
Going in to a Judge's space against her will is in fact "assulting" her space.

Your facts are wrong again, regardiing Halverson's alleged sleeping on the bench. She did sumbit a note from her medical doctor collaborating her incident of having a hypoglycemic event.
The other comments were made by her disgruntled office staff.

Halverson is not the laughing stock.. that is what the media, Hardcastle and Court Adminstration want you to believe.

What is a laughing stock is how the Neveda Judiciary has handled this situation. Hardcastle is a laughing stock.. Cherry and Spoor still have not been held accountable for their ticket fixing and jury dismissals for favors from friends and family.

I hope Halverson IS reelected. Maybe she will get the chance she should have had all along.

I say vote out Hardcastle.. remove Cherry from the Supreme Court. Incarcerate Ileen Spoor for impersonating a Judge and fraud.

Stephen wrote on January 31, 2008 11:44 AM: OMG its true. Las Vegas is SO different from the rest of the US that Halverson might actually be reelected.

What CAN you do do disqualify your self for judicial election in Las Vegas?

Halverson married an ex-prision felon (burglary, drugs, guns) while he was on parole, has an unpaid $40,000 judgment against her arising from an SF rent control scam, and admitted to dining with sitting jurors in two crimininal cases.

In response to allegations of sleeping on the bench, Halverson first claimed that it was her medication that made her fall asleep, then changed her story and asserted she was not sleeping at all but was in a diabetic’s hypoglycemic coma. (The Nevada Supreme Court noted this change in story in its opinion refusing to end Halverson's temporary suspension from the bench.)

I personally watched an on camera statement by Halverson that she was "being assaulted" by court administrator Chuck Short when she barricaded herself in her office with two “body guards” --but the administrator video taped the incident (which tape I also saw—there was nothing controversal or assaultive) and Halverson is a loon.

Judge Halverson is the laughingstock of the entire nation and has turned the Las Vegas bench into a 500 pound joke. And Las Vegas will be an even bigger joke if she is reelected AFTER all of her various foibles have come to light.

The allegations against Halverson are far too pervasive to simply be the product of a vendetta by Chief Judge Hardcastle and former Halverson clerk Spoor.

And dignified and judicial Halverson is not.

If the public thinks that their are other judges guilty of misconduct they should vote them out of office as well, not excuse Halverson's unethical and clownish behavior.

"Clark County Family Court Judge Stefany Miley, her husband, Edward R. Miley and their law firm were sued by a Las Vegas woman just days after Stefany Miley took the bench in January 2005. Attempts to reach the plaintiff, Valerie Carr-Blum, were unsuccessful, and Miley did not return a call placed to her office at Family Court.

The case was sealed and closed Jan. 20 -- exactly a year after the lawsuit was filed. Late last year, the case was assigned to District Court Judge Douglas Herndon."

One has to wonder why the "Honorable" Stfany Miley would need to seal a case concerning her and her husband.

    What are YOU hiding Stefany?

Oh..btw.. Miley went to Clark County Family Court Judge Stefany Miley, her husband, Edward R. Miley and their law firm were sued by a Las Vegas woman just days after Stefany Miley took the bench in January 2005. Ahh..Stefany.. why did you have one of your judge buddies seal the case. What are you hiding?

Your bio said you went to California Western School of Law.. Is that a correspondence course??? LOL.. Sounds like one of those late night fly by night law schools.. LOL.

Yeah, we can't wait to hear all about you Stefany.

Be honest, did you used to work for the Nationl Enquier or Star magazine?

That is about the level of your journalism.

Your stories are slanted, one sided, inaccurate and clearly you do not even research prior to printing this crap.

I used to think that Halverson was crazy with her "they are out to get me"
stuff.. but frankly, after reading this article, and several other written by you, KC Howard and Fredrickson, it is clear to me that at minimum the LVRJ wants to make sure Halverson is crucified in the press.

One has to wonder why. One poster keeps saying.."connect the dots". I am really starting to wonder if the public was given the route of the dots.. we would see they DO all lead to each other.

I don't know if Halverson really is paranoid as some have suggested. How can one be paranoid if what they are saying is in fact true.

You and your RJC buddies need to come up with a better approach for railroading Halverson. This path is tired, old, and quickly losing ANY credibility.

Oh.. and while you are at it..It's time to post a new pic of you.. I saw you last week and you are far older and heavier than the "deceitful" picture you put on your column.

sealed court records regarding lawsuits involving her and her husband??

    http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/2007/Feb-11-Sun-2007/news/11454532.html

Do you find this behavior deceitful?

Will you be asking what Judge Halverson thinks about Judges who seal their own cases so the public cannot see their records?

    I would bet not.

I would suggest before you put things in writing that have no basis and are simply showing your dislike of a particular person you should really do your homework and make sure that more than half of the public officials in Nevada are not doing the same thing.

HelenaC wrote on January 25, 2008 11:11 AM: Wow you are really trying to stir things up when there is nothing there.

As other readers have said, it is clear you are singling out Halverson for no other reason but to TRY and make her look bad.

Well, it's not working. Intelligent readers can see past your and the Review Journal's smear campaign.

I suggest you take a look at other Judges websites. I think you will find the same thing you are accusing Halverson of.

So I guess all these elected officials that have not gone back and changed their websites are deceitful.

The only one looking deceitful here is YOU Ms. Morrison. You should be ashamed of yourself and you shotty reporting skills.

Is there a committee to remove columnists with no talent and deceitful reporting?

    You need to be removed.

I find it laughable that you are trying to suggest that Halverson is being "deceitful" while clearly numerous other officials have endorsements on their sites from previous elections dating further back than 2006.

I suppose a second rate columnist like yourself would look for anything to fill up the space on your inaccurate bias column.

You are simply part of the network of people who dislike Halverson for no other reason than her size and outspoken nature. She cannot be bought. She cannot be controlled. Makes you angry doesn't it. That is clear.

I suggest you see a professional about your hated and disdain for people you don't know and have no understanding of.

Maybe Morrison will do an expose on him next week. I wonder why no other newspaper, magazine, or television station is covering this scandal? Maybe it's because most other news outlets have an EDITOR?

Research new candidates for ties to the same interests and vote in only the most qualified to serve the best interests of the people and not the status quo.
Move for impeachment or recall of an elected official upon any credible evidence of corruption and/or conflicts of interest mercilessly with the understanding the elected official works for the people of Nevada and not the status quo.
If Halverson or anyone else can statnd up to that standard, they deserve a chance. If not CYA!!
