TRAFFIC DELAYS: Descent Into Las Vegas

Air Force One touched down in Las Vegas at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday as President Bush prepared to spend today at events here.

The group greeting him on the tarmac included Gov. Jim Gibbons and his wife, Dawn, Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman and state Sen. Barbara Cegavske, R-Las Vegas. A limousine stood between the bottom of the airplane stairs and the media, and the president could not be seen or photographed with those greeting him.

  • Sources said the president was to spend Wednesday night at The Venetian.

Bush is scheduled to give a speech on national security to the Nevada Policy Research Institute this morning. The event, which is not open to the public, will be at the Emerald at Queensridge, on Rampart Boulevard near Alta Drive in Summerlin.

After the speech, Bush and his entourage will attend a private Republican Party fundraiser at a residence owned by Sands Corp. Chairman Sheldon Adelson in the Tournament Hills development, north of Summerlin Parkway, near Rampart.

A presidential visit usually means traffic delays, and drivers should expect no different this morning.

Officials gave no routes for the president's travels. But motorists could encounter traffic disruptions on Rampart at Alta; on Rampart and Hills Center Drive, north of the Summerlin Parkway; and on the Summerlin Parkway in that area.

After the fundraiser, Bush will return to McCarran International Airport, where he is scheduled to depart about 12:25 p.m. Motorists should expect delays on routes into the airport.

There's a threat to our country right there!!! So many illegals coming over our boarders and screwing up our country.I feel like a minority in own my homeland.Since when does Americans have to learn to speak Spanish at American own Stores or anywhere for that matter? And why do Americans suffer when it comes to jobs especially, in (CONSTRUCTION/BRICKLAYERS) in LAS VEGAS. ILLEGAL Mexicans fresh from Mexico get the jobs and get right into the Union ILLEGALLY and work while Americans get laid OFF. President Bush fix those problems will YA?
Illegal Mexicans need to go!!! American FIRST than maybe help those who want to enter our Country Legally. We need a President who is going to worry about those problems!!!!

No, I took a look at losers like you and went back to Washington where there's more losers like you (Harry Reid / Nancy Pelosi).

Aaron wrote on January 31, 2008 06:19 PM: why gung-ho support the "commander and chief" no matter what (while he is in office) lest we forget the founders outlined our constitutional articles of impeachment and term limits for presidency, we live in a democracy because the world, its nations, and ours have problems, lies, greed, treachery, wishful or positive thinking doesn't change reality. Our constitution has rules like this for reason, it has nothing to do with "patriotism" (or homage to a king 24/7), we're not all solders, he's not my commander and chief, I'm a citizen, he's a president of a republic (re public).

I laugh at the fools who voted for Bush (some twice) making excuses for the jerk and harking back to Clinton, who has been out of office for over seven years!

Bush pushed to store nuclear waste here in Nevada and the same Republicans voted him into office.

    Republicans have always been stupid!

This not only can be a great civic training tool for our children’s teachers it shows us how fragile our own society is by the need for so much security...We should embrace our President no matter what political party as our country must stand tall with our "Commander in Chief". Welcome to Las Vegas Mr. President.

GOD wrote on January 31, 2008 05:31 PM: If we ever want to be taken seriously in Nevada, we do need to have Presidential visits from time to time. Bush doesn't have to sneak in and out of Las Vegas in the dark of night like Slick Willy.

Bradl - as a pilot myself, good luck on your flight training, but seriously, who's going to be skydiving with the temperatures aloft below zero?- popsicles?

Oh, and the President's speech was very relevant today [War on Terror] when it was announced today that we killed one of the top Al-Quida commanders. He paid at visit to Allah on Monday.

    Go U.S.A.

Garrett Hair wrote on January 31, 2008 04:36 PM: I think it is great that the President came to Las Vegas! I am sure that he will have a good time here. Even though it will cause delays in traffic it's an awesome experience to have the President here. Also, I am sure he will raise a lot of money here from the fundraiser. I hope that everything goes smoothly.

bradl wrote on January 31, 2008 03:53 PM: Timeranger does have a good point, but think I'm thinking about it from another perspective. The President's visit impacts my studies for my career and livelihood. For his visit, a TFR (temp. flight restriction) has been placed around Las Vegas for all aviation save commercial flights from 18 hours before he arrived to 18 hours after he leaves. So I'm stuck on the ground during a great time for me to be in the air, and on top of that, half a day before he got in and half a day after he's gone.

Not only does it hurt me, but it hurts the city's economy. No tourist flights from here to the Grand Canyon. No skydiving. No helicopter tours. No rich guys coming from the LA area to spend their money here. That's a lot of people sitting around not getting paid for doing what they do, through no fault of their own.

That's a serious hit to the economy here, and I'm not surprised more people aren't complaining about it.

oldlawdawg wrote on January 31, 2008 03:47 PM: All of this whinning about traffic jams and Sheldon Adelson. This is 24/7 Vegas -- you tell me when the guy can come to town without causing a traffic jam. And you all would bitch no matter where he stayed, but the guy has to sleep somewhere. he is the president, for godssakes! I wonder if there would be all of these complaints about traffic and hotel accomodations if the president was popular. Face it, the preseident has the right to do travel and the like just like everybody else, and the enormous security requirements should not be a bartrier between him and the rest of the country, nor should he have to visit all of us in order to visit some of us. Be honest: you are all complaining because you do not like George Bush, and not because his visit is really such a huge inconvenience. The president is the president after all, and he deserves some modicum of additional respect simply due to the office he inhabits. One day the White House may be occupied by a president you all like, and he will come to visit you or people you agree with. When that happens, do not be offended by those who lodge petty complaints about one inconvenient traffic jam simply because they do not like whoever is president. I am no fan of George Bush, but his security is no more cumbersome than it will be for whomever we elect this November. ARE YOU ALL GOING TO BITCH WHEN HILLARY OR BARAK VISIT VEGAS AS THE CANDIATE ENTITLED TO A FULL SECRET SECURITY DETAIL? I doubt it.
