Two judge candidates leave race

Two candidates in separate judicial races pulled out of the 2008 election, paving the way for a sitting district judge and Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman's son to retain or take seats on the bench.

Michael Root, who was the sole challenger to District Judge Douglas Herndon, pulled out of the race for Department 3. Root did not return several phone calls seeking comment.

  • Herndon was appointed to Department 3 by then-Gov. Kenny Guinn in January 2005.

Before becoming a judge, Herndon was the chief deputy district attorney in charge of the special victim's unit. He specialized in prosecuting child abuse homicides and sexual abuse cases.

"I was obviously very pleased (to hear that Root withdrew)," Herndon said. "It's certainly a weight off my shoulders. I can now continue with my job and not worry about all that comes with an election season."

Mark Karris, who was running against attorney Eric Goodman for a newly created Las Vegas Justice of the Peace position, also withdrew his candidacy.

Karris was Goodman's only opponent for Department 11.

Karris declined to comment on why he is pulling out of the race.

Goodman, who specializes in criminal defense, is a former partner of the Nevada firm Goodman, Brown and Presrirut.

A dozen incumbent district judges out of 25 haven't drawn challengers. A total of 95 candidates are running for more than 40 judgeships in District Court, Family Court and justice courts.

People want to sit back and wait for someone else to fix the problems which take longer if ever.

Everyone who has information that help connect the dots can assist in making things happen.

The reason things are the way they are is the people and their lack of involvment.

There are more poeple who understand that and are coming forward and connecting the dots.

They continue doing what they do.

But beyond the finacial benefit of campaign fund shenanigans is the actual 'juice' the position serves for the special interests. We have issues now, that are under investigation concerning conflicts of interest as everyone knows.
'lil Goodman has been groomed all his life.

In all fairness, that doesnt mean either would cross the line, but they shouldnt be given the chance. Best thing citizens can do is watch every move they make even down to the slightest lack of judicial descretion or error in violation of NRS or federal statutes.

While the drafters of the rules on the Supreme Court believe them to pass constitutional muster on free speech issues, those same legal eagles may soon be wishing the new rules actually are uncontitutional so they could be quietly done away with as a few more judicial elections may well reveal that judical campaigns are ripe for financial corruption, and a corruption that is hard to prove at that. Indeed, all of the money and record will look just the same as any other opposed candidate, and the only real "evidence" would have to be the testimony of one of the participants. Heck, that even opens the door to political executions as enemies of candidates can file their papers and later drop out in order to subsequently claim they were "hired" by the candidate to present a "friendly opposition" in order to accept campaign money (little risk of jaikl time for the drop out). What fun!

Now he only has to worry about corruption investigations

'Karris declined to comment on why he is pulling out of the race.'

The truth will come out. If Goodman is elected unopposed..every move he makes should be scrutinized. This would rob the voters of an opportunity to choose.
