Suspect slain by LV police ID'd; officers out of hospital

Las Vegas police on Thursday provided more details of a shootout Wednesday night that left a California fugitive dead and two officers injured.

The shooting occurred when officers were taking the fugitive into custody, police said.

  • The fugitive suddenly pulled out a gun and shot one of the officers.

Three officers responded by shooting and killing Jeffrey Williams, 28, in the front yard of a home on the 2000 block of Canosa Avenue, near Eastern and St. Louis avenues, Las Vegas police said.

One officer was shot in the leg and a second was hurt by the muzzle blast, police said. Both have been released from the hospital.

The incident began about 6:20 p.m. after deputy U.S. marshals asked for assistance from Las Vegas police to pull over a car driven by Williams, who was wanted on a parole violation in California, police said. He had been convicted of robbery.

Williams briefly stopped the green Cadillac he was driving, then sped off. The pursuit headed north for more than two miles until the car hit a traffic signal's control box.

The driver and passenger both ran into the nearby neighborhood.

Williams died at the scene. Officers caught the passenger, Quentin Avery, 26, and booked him at the Las Vegas Detention Center on charges of obstructing an officer.

Under Las Vegas police policy, the names of the officers involved will not be released until today, 48 hours after the incident.

That is what we need more of!!!

The dead criminal is someone's family member..... they should blame the criminal for his lifestyle and the poor choices he made and quit blaming the cops. Of course, the liberal mindset loves to point fingers rather than admit any wrongdoing.

The officer being shot isn't offensive? If I recall, the police were trying apprehend, not kill when they were shot at. We are talking about two criminals being tracked by U.S. Marshals. Why didn't they pull over if they are so upstanding? Oh yeah, the tiny little tidbit about the suspect pulling a gun on the officer and firing, that must be a mistake. Gosh, I guess they were just cruising around. Why did he have a gun on him in the first place? I see, the bad, bad cop killing the suspect that fled once, wrecked the car and fled on foot must be a heartless killer in disguise as a good guy. Remember, they were running into a residential area where innocent bystanders are. Metro just can't win. If an innocent person got shot, Metro gets blasted because they didn't protect the innocent person. If a suspect gets killed after he shoots a cop, it's bad Metro again. Why didn't they try something else? The suspect could have done something else besides fire the weapon. I'm tired of the criminals getting all the benefits of the doubt and the good guys being prosecuted. While this person may have been a good guy to his family, he wasn't thinking of them when he committed crime after crime. The loss is sad and I'm sure his family is devastated, but Nevada has become the nation's criminal dumping ground and the police hasve to act in the best interest of the innocent civilian.

You know none of you know the whole story on what happened!! None of you know the type of person this man was. How loving he was and how much the kids in his family loved him!!

If this were a family member of mine, I would remember the loving and good things he did but also face the reality he endangered the public fleeing recklessly, pulled a gun on police, who also have people that love them and want to make it home.

Rather selfish for anyone to throw out emotional BS like society or police did something wrong, he is responsible for his own death and thankfully his gun didn’t discharge killing an innocent by stander.
If he were a family member I loved, I would be hurt and understand his actions caused me and his family the pain not police.

It feels sh*tty to lose a family member to violence (I know this), but, I bet if you're such an upstanding member of society, that the SHAME visited upon your family by this loose cannon pales the jolt of loss due to stupidity. You know, you might be able to walk on water, but if you shoot a cop...duh!
