Father endures 'grueling hours'

Question of why kept coming at dad

As he stayed with his son recovering from two bullet wounds at University Medical Center this week, Victoreano Bravo had plenty of time to think.

"I kept thinking why. Why us? Why my son?" he said in Spanish on Wednesday when reached by phone at his home.

  • It was the same question police and the community were asking when the 16-year-old Western High School student was shot Monday afternoon near Gibson Middle School.

The shooting that seriously injured Victor Bravo, a sophomore, marked the third time in 11 days bullets were fired outside of a Clark County School District campus.

Hospital officials said Wednesday afternoon that Victor Bravo was in good condition.

"I feel bad for the family of the boy they arrested," Victoreano Bravo said. "I'm sure his family is suffering like we did when we heard Victor was shot."

Las Vegas police announced earlier in the day they arrested a sophomore at Western High School on a charge of attempted murder with use of a deadly weapon. A police report identified the suspect as Tevin O'Neal Carr. He is 16.

The police report said that Victor Bravo was shot after trying to help a friend who was being jumped by at least five teenagers.

Victoreano Bravo, 37, said his son was shot in the stomach and in the right shoulder. Both of the bullets exited from his back, the elder Bravo said.

He said this past week has been surreal, especially while watching the news and hearing about the incident from local media.

He said the most difficult time during the week was when he received a phone call shortly after the shooting from a teacher telling him his son had been shot. He said he did not find out his son was going to recover fully until after doctors finished the two-hour surgery.

Victoreano Bravo said he could not even recall when doctors told him the good news because he was so distressed.

"Those were some grueling hours," Victoreano Bravo said.

The father said his son is lucky because he is expected to continue his life without any major defects.

Victoreano Bravo credits God for that, and he said that as a spiritual man, he holds no animosity toward his son's shooter.

    "May God bless him."

This does not excuse the crime but if we are to understand why illegal aliens commit crimes, fake ID’s, illegally crossing the border, illegally collect state/federal benefits we must also understand why young black men attacking many illegals.
The black community has been displaced by the overwhelming cheap labor this has impacted the black community more than any other.
Not paying attention to the ill effect illegal cheap labor is having on society is as bad as having no compassion for the boy who was shot.

No wonder our nation is going to the dumps; because of some people who does'n have compassion. Why don't we take the example of this family who is ready to forgive the shooter? That's a real family whether they are illegals or not.

The suspect should be prosecuted to the full extent. Which means, as a juvenile he will be back out and about before we know it.

Hopefully Victor Bravo will recover quickly. No person, child or adult, should be a victim like this.

What a shame, the minute I read "he said in spanish" my sense of compassion was altered. Can't help it though ... I see another illegal unwilling to learn our language while tax payer dollars educate and mend this wounded child. Perhaps Mexico would be a safer place to raise their children.

It would be easy to say that you are uneducated, racist, and a bigot. Rather, I am asking Jesus Christ, who was not white by the way, to forgive you of your sins. We love you no matter what. May Go have mercy on your soul.

Be cheaper in the long run to pay for boats to Africa and buses to Mexico!

tbone wrote on February 28, 2008 07:36 AM: To answer that question is easy....It happened because Clark county does not have a plan to keep the campuses safe... When there is a fight after or before school or on the weekends the juveniles school of record should be notified because if the combatants go to the same school there will be a follow up. Had Western high known about the fight at the pizzza place on sunday, monday morning they could've pulled the kids from class, then they could've done a weapons sweep or search using wands and physically checking bookbags. If they did they probabyl would have found the Gun that i'm sure Tevin had brought to school monday. Was his intent to use it after school? who knows. But unless they have random weapons sweeps, occassional classroom bookbag checks and or metal detectors when the students arrive there will continue to be students in this district armed on our school campuses. In my estimate at least 3 or more students are armed today in our schools with a firearm. They know that noone is Checking.
