NORM: It might be 'Live from Las Vegas'

Finish this sentence: "Live from Las Vegas, it's. ..." If Lorne Michaels has his way, we'll be hearing "Live from Las Vegas, it's Saturday Night Live!"

According to the New York Daily News, Michaels is "in the early stage of talking" with a Las Vegas casino about moving a spinoff of NBC's long-time powerhouse program here.

Michaels, the show's co-creator, has been tossing around names such as Martin Short, Jon Lovitz and Julia Sweeney, according to the News.

He has discussed alum appearances by Chris Rock, Adam Sandler and Steve Martin, the newspaper said.

  • '21' TO PREMIERE HERE

The world premiere of "21," the Kevin Spacey-produced gambling film that's set in Las Vegas, will be at ShoWest here in March.

Planet Hollywood Resort has landed the after-party.

The March 12 screening will be part of ShoWest. The largest annual motion picture industry convention will be held at Bally's and Paris Las Vegas hotels March 10-13.

Joining Spacey in Las Vegas will be cast members Laurence Fishburne, Kate Bosworth and Jim Sturgess.

Many scenes of "21" were shot at Planet Hollywood last year. Spacey bought the rights to the book, "Bringing Down the House" by Ben Mezrich. It's a true story of a team of MIT students who came up with a card-counting system to beat Las Vegas out of millions.

The "21" cast also will be honored at ShoWest's awards ceremony. Anne Hathaway will be named the female star of the year and Emile Hirsch the top male star. Awards also will go to Robert Downey Jr., Brendan Fraser, Sarah Jessica Parker, Seth Rogen, Abigail Breslin, Christopher Nolan and producer Charles Roven.

David Mamet, Alan Ball and Helen Hunt will be honored for their films. Mamet will receive the ShoWest excellence in filmmaking award. Ball, the screenwriter for Oscar-winning "American Beauty," will be honored for his directing debut, "Towelhead." Hunt will be named breakthrough director of the year for "Then She Found Me."

ShoWest organizers are expecting appearances by Hathaway, Hirsch, Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Christina Ricci and filmmakers George Lucas and Nolan, among others.

Jeff Winn wrote on March 01, 2008 12:20 PM: I happen to know a couple of the MIT guys personally. They most certainly did not lose the money back, that's just a lie. Ted and Dave claim that they "gave it all back" or "lost it all back" - do you guys have any proof or documentation of this, or are you just making this stuff up?

I think Dave and Ted are quite possibly either shills for the casino industry or casino industry workers. They don't want anyone to win or think they can win.

"b.s. automatica shuffle machines" are primarily installed because by saving shuffling time the house gets to deal more hands, and with the house advantage they will make more money the more hands they deal per hour. Also there is no difference in counting cards with a hand shuffled shoe vs. a machine shuffled shoe (shuffle tracking and continuous shuffle machines etc., are different of course)

Mike Aponte ("Jason Fisher" in the book) is the 2004 World Series of Blackjack Champion ( http://www.blackjackinstitute.com/store/Mike_Aponte_pic.php ) and also used some of his money from the MIT days to do volunteer work helping low income and minority students achieve higher education.

David Irvine (one of the "spotters" in the book) ( http://www.blackjackinstitute.com/store/Dave_pic.php ) runs a successful environmental engineering firm. Dave and Mike have also collaborated with local company Lightspeed VT to produce a virtual training environment to teach the MIT blackjack methods ( http://www.blackjackvt.com/view_trailer.html )

Jeff Ma ("Kevin Lewis") runs an internet company http://www.protrade.com/AboutManagement.html

The MIT blackjack methods are legal, ethical, and they work, that's why Dave and Ted want to tell disparaging lies. I suggest readers do the research, look at the links and find out for yourself if these guys are "dead broke" or not.

Dave wrote on February 29, 2008 12:25 PM: They may have 'brought down the house' for a few good weekends, but they are all probably dead broke now, except for the guy that sold the story. All they did is what most gamblers do - win and then give it all back - they just did it on a bigger scale, that's all. Thanks to them, we have to put up with those b.s. automatica reshuffle machines that the strip uses today. No more card counting - hell, you can barely find a real shoe these days that the dealer hand shuffles.

Ted wrote on February 29, 2008 08:43 AM: "Bringing Down The House" did indeed chronicle the "enhanced" exploits of the MIT team. But what is often overlooked with a closer read is that through their greed, paranoia and naivete they ended up losing it all back.
