Ex-UMC boss charged with enriching his friends with no-work hospital contracts

A Nevada judge on Thursday set trial Sept. 8 for the former chief executive of Southern Nevada's only public hospital, who pleaded not guilty to five counts of theft and five counts of misconduct by a public officer.

Former University Medical Center boss Lacy Thomas remained free on $500,000 bail after his arraignment Thursday on charges handed up by a grand jury last week.

    • He could face from 10 to 75 years in prison if convicted on all charges.

    Prosecutor Scott Mitchell calls Thomas the first, but says he probably won't be the only former hospital official to face charges stemming from allegations Thomas steered no-bid and no-work contracts to friends and associates in Chicago.

    Thomas had been executive director of John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital in Chicago before being hired at UMC in 2004.

    He was dismissed from UMC in January 2007 after auditors found massive financial losses.
