NORM: Viewers want 'em to put on the dog

A case of puppy love has turned into a dogfight pitting meteorologist John Fredericks against management at KVBC-TV, Channel 3.

In the middle of the storm is Fredericks' 8-month-old golden lab puppy, LJ, who replaced Fredericks' longtime on-air forecasting companion, Jordan, a golden retriever who died last summer.

LJ, short for Little Jordan, has become a cause célèbre since he disappeared from Fredericks' forecasts.

Dog lover Susan Russell organized a bring-back-LJ protest by sending an e-mail blast to several hundred animal lovers, calling for them to flood the station with calls and e-mails and join a picket line.

  • Reached on Friday, KVBC general manager, Lisa Howfield, initially responded by saying she and Fredericks mutually agreed to take LJ off the air.

But she called back later and said, "It was John's choice to take the dog off the air. I would have liked us to keep the dog on the air. I know people aren't going to believe that, but. ..."

Asked if the dispute involved contract negotiations with Fredericks, she said, "He has a long-term contract."

A source close to the situation said Fredericks was seeking a separate deal for the dog. Another source said the battle has to do with KVBC wanting "exclusive and total rights to LJ's image."

"It's John's dog. His son, in a lot of ways," said Howfield.

Fredericks has apparently been, umm, muzzled, because he did not respond to e-mail and telephone requests for comment.

Arthur Kroncke wrote on March 15, 2008 10:17 PM: John Fredericks is a nice man and everyone loves his little dog. The station should have no "rights" to the dog at all. But John should not be paid extra for the dog. The station should realize that both John and the dog have a following, and should let John use the dogs image as he sees fit!

Fred wrote on March 15, 2008 11:05 AM: Sounds like it's more about exclusive rights to the animals image. What did KVBC do to earn that? I know from personal experience having had the unfourtunate dis-pleasure of working there that in training they plead for the employee to give 2 weeks notice when they leave and when you give them the professional courtesy of that notice, they fire you and don't pay for your last two weeks. They are only out for themselves, are dishonest and their position about using his personal pet's image for the stations financial gain without compensation is in my experience typical KVBC strong arm tactics for self gain, exclusively.

GOD wrote on March 15, 2008 10:05 AM: John Fredericks is getting a little looney tunes over the new dog. I read his posts on his first dog before he passed... that was nice -- but let's not exploit this animal too!!!

That was a hilarious post about David Copperfield (and true)... RapistHotline... I'm still laughing as I write this!

I know a lot of people are happy to hear that Gordie Brown is going to be performing at Planet Hollywood. Gordie is a great entertainer and an even better individual.

Little Bow Wow wrote on March 15, 2008 08:35 AM: John Fredericks and his dogs is getting a little freaky by now. Why should the TV station have to put up with his quirkiness? No one else drags their dog to work. I'd love to take my dog to work, but it's not kosher. Same should go with him. Fredericks has a few screws loose I think.
