A Desert Pines High School student was shot in the foot on his way home from school Friday afternoon, Las Vegas police said.

The student, Christopher Colbert, was shot about two blocks from the school, at the entrance to Vera Johnson Manor near Lamb Boulevard and Bonanza Road, where he lives, police said.

  • Family members said Colbert wasn't seriously injured.

Officers were called to the scene about 3:15 p.m. When they arrived, Colbert had already been taken to North Vista Hospital.

Police said Colbert was uncooperative when questioned about the incident at the hospital.

Investigators from the Las Vegas gang unit were on the scene, where police said they found at least seven shell cases.

Colbert's older brother, Leroy Brown, said the assailants probably mistook Colbert for someone else.

"He must look like somebody else," said Brown, 26. "It was personal, but not against him."

Colbert is not in a gang and does well in school, Brown said.

"He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Another resident of the housing complex, Larry Feazell, was taking out his trash when the shooting started.

He said he heard several shots and saw Colbert leaning against a wall.

Feazell said he didn't think Colbert had been shot until he helped him sit, removed his shoe and saw there was blood.

He said he immediately called a friend, who took Colbert to the hospital.

Police said they had no one in custody and no suspects in the shooting late Friday.

It was the fourth shooting near a Las Vegas school in recent weeks.

On Feb. 15, Palo Verde High School freshman Christopher Privett was killed in a drive-by shooting as he walked home with friends.

About a week later, a man was shot during an altercation a half block from Bonanza High School in the vicinity of hundreds of students who were walking home from school.

On Feb. 26, 16-year-old Western High School student Victor Bravo was shot outside Gibson Middle School about 10 minutes after the school day ended.

Metro and school police have increased the level of patrol around schools in recent weeks; but since they still don't issue any crystal balls down at supply, we can not tell when some punk is going to shoot it out at a school, or anywhere else for that matter.

    Have a great weekend

Hmmm, could it be he is afraid? That is the climate this town lives in. He probably knows who shot him, but knows if he talks he will be killed.

We can't let kids face these gangsters alone.

Take the money from the prison system if you have to.
