Railroad accidents drop 63 percent in Nevada, group says

RENO -- A railroad industry group says the number of train collisions or derailments in Nevada dropped 63 percent in 2007 from a year earlier.

The Association of American Railroads says there were seven accidents last year, compared with 19 in 2006.

The association report is based on data from the Federal Railroad Administration.

Accidents last year included three fatalities involving trespassers, compared with six the year before.

    • Nevada was one of 34 states that showed a decline in accidents. Among those states, the group says incidents dropped to 1,814 in 2007, down from 2,289 in 2006.
